Timed turns? Nooooooo. (RESOLVED! Thanks, Brain Good Games!)
Ugh, this is going to single-handedly turn me off of this game. One of the reasons I play turn-based games is because I can take as long as I want to take my turn. Having a mandatory timer on my turn is a real killjoy. I don't play games like this to feel hurried. I hope you guys will consider letting us disable the timer.

i will say at first i wasnt to sure about the timed nature, but i think overall it really helps this game and the over all feel. For example in skyboats no timer but i feel super stressed with every turn i make with so many different options you have to calculate, where in this game it kind of guides you forward to not just make smart moves but to just keep moving in general, with a constant slight tension . With the amound of time it gives you for a turn you shouldnt really even notice it once you know the rules and mechanics. (at least until high ranks ;) hope this helps in some way, By far my favoirt game of his

I'm not a fan of a timer either. However I trust that anyone who can design such great games as Axes and Acres knows what he is doing. Very much looking forward to Minos Strategos.

Oh, I'm sure they know what they're doing! They're introducing an arbitrary mechanic that disadvantages people who are learning the game, people who take their time with turn-based strategy games, and people who might want to step away from the computer to get a drink of water, check on a child, answer the phone, etc. And while I'm sure some people like Esty don't mind or even enjoy it, it doesn't serve any function other than to artificially introduce tension.

By the way, I say this having played an early build of the game. I stepped away to do something and upon returning was greeted with a message telling me that it would cut me some slack this one time, but I couldn't do that in the future! I stuck with it a bit longer, but that annoying red bar counting down how much time I have left is just too much of a nag. If I want a chess clock with my turn-based gaming, I don't need the game designer thrusting one at me. I'm sure there's an app or something I could download.

you can trust that there is a pause feature (incase you have to step away) and then when you say disadvantage for new players ? He is a smart enough dev to make sure that doesnt happen thus when you are learning the game its easy, and takes babysteps at getting more and more difficult. I would say learning AND difficulty is the smoothest out of all the games even WITH a timer =) but dont take my word for it youll see yourself.

This is also coming from a person that thought skyboats was way to complex and difficult to play, and i thought A&A stressed me out and was tedious because all the thinking ahead i felt like i had to do. I dont generally do well with Strategy games >.<

Oh, good to know this has timed turns!

This will save me from dealing with a Steam refund. Now I can just not buy. Thanks Tom!

Hopefully we can get some input from the developer on why he feels a timer is necessary.

Is it used to provide an additional challenge at higher levels? If so I would prefer if another way was found to do this. It won't stop me from buying the game. It would be a shame if the timer became an obstacle to the game gaining wider popularity.

Where do you all see that the turns are timed? I don't see that on the store page video or screenshots. What am I missing, please?

Okay, okay! Message received! There will absolutely be an untimed mode at launch!

As always thanks for your feedback! It really helps BrainGoodGames be the best they can be!

VICTORY!!!! :)

Thanks so much, BrickRoadDX. Sorry to be a pain about it, but huge props for understanding that some of us are just kinda slow. :) You guys rock!

@tomchick it's no problem at all! You're just the gadfly we need to be better. The same thing happened with Axes and Acres!
tomchick Jan 25, 2017 @ 10:24pm
Ah, so now there's a separate ranking for "relaxed mode". Perfect compromise. Thanks so much, guys!

Ooh, and that's also where you plugging in the new mode you'll be unveiling on Friday. Can't wait.
