As the map is always the same, a good strategy is to hide in the first gas cloud slightly off centre. The ships will rush at you and you can hammer them as they approach (try all stop and turn your broadside towards then as they approach).
Once all of the ships are dead, move up to the next gas cloud and hammer the defense platforms and space station with impunity.
Plus the solar waves can help you along as the computer is too stupid to hide when they come alone, make sure you're in a gas cloud whenever they come along.
UPDATE: Worked like a charm! Thanks
How large were the two fleets you guys took in?
Use mostly cruisers or small support ships?
