Sadly we don't seem to have any kind of dispatch or civilians we can talk to over radio, to provide us with any information yet. Hopefully we get a little more detail on what we can expect during a mission.
It also gives some insight as to why fog-o-war is lifted from the hardcore career mode. Revealing the map would provide a clue as to your location. So for me, I have come around to appreciate that decision and would use that setting on a hardcore career myself. Although initially, it did not occur to me why they would reveal the map like they did or how that was more "difficult".
I think they will tweak the career settings here in a future update or two so we can cater the careers to our liking. In the meantime, particularly as a new player, there's no point in bothering with career. ...just play custom and turn on the features you want.
I think a good direction for the devs to take would be to follow the pattern used in other games where there are maybe some preset checkboxes for "Beginner", "Normal", "Hard" with appropriate checkbox presets that you are able to deviate from at your own choosing for a "Custom" career setting. Presets like this are also helpful in pointing out to users which of the choices makes the game "harder". It is not readily apparent for instance that revealing the entire map without fog-o-war is more difficult, particularly if it's tied to revealing player location on the big map.
