SteamWorld Dig 2 is the perfect example of what all sequels should be: keeping the core elements which made the previous iteration brilliant and distinctive, and improving the formula on almost every aspect.

Playing StemaWorld Dig 1 first is highly recommended.

+ Quite unique in terms of gameplay (2D Metroidvania + mining).
+ You are free to excavate the mine as it pleases you.
+ Very distinctive environments, atmospherically speaking.
+ Hunting for the 42 missing artifacts is great.

+ You are mostly free to explore the world as it pleases you.
+ Some achievements are quite fun to unlock, especially the "Sequence breaker" one.
+ Nice and interesting theme (post-apocalyptic cowboys robots).
+ Knowing how much secrets remained to be found in each area is very handy.
+ A high level of polish makes the game shine.
+ No useless backtracking thanks to a clever teleportation system.

- The combat is not very interesting.
- The humor tends to be more silly than funny.
- The game tends to be too casual in terms of difficulty (even though instant deaths happen).
- The "Hell" secret level is much too difficult compared to the rest of the game.
- NPC are mostly cliché and not very interesting.
- Overall the story is quite barebones.
- You are too much hand-guided in the story, where to go and so on.
- No side quests.
- Compared to the first game, the light system is basically useless (especially once you purchase the "infinite light" upgrade).

If you like silly Flash games where you grind some funny little stuff to get upgrades and do the same thing better over and over, you will find something of the same spirit in SteamWorld Dig 1 & 2, which are games easy to get into, mildly addictive, and borderline casual. But it's also much better, extremely polished, and has a lot more depth. Especially, you are offered a huge world to explore and to get lost into. Sometimes I was amazed to access some secret room which turned out to be a huge corridor leading to a part of the map yet greater than what I had already explored. The additional "caves" spread all over the map usually offer a more puzzle-oriented or platforming-skills oriented challenge, which is welcome.

Briefly speaking, you can't really be wrong playing SteamWorld Dig 2. It's beautiful, it's clever, it's fun, and the game just gets better and better as you play it. It's a very strong recommendation.


It's better in every aspect. Graphics are nicer, the world is bigger, the feeling of freedom is much more intense. It really follows the exact same structure (mining in the overall map, coming back to town to heal and get upgrades, unlocking teleporting point, going into "challenge" caves, unlocking the same new abilities). The environments are more atmospheric, there are much more upgrades available (and you can't have them all at once, but you are free to try different of them each time you go to town, so there is a mild "build" element), and, for some unclear reason, all the ingredients work together even better than they already were.

Overall, SteamWorld Dig 2 takes a step further away from the "addictive Flash game" structure of the first, and sometimes it feels. There are components of the game which are simply relics from the first, for instance the light. You are equipped with a light which runs out of fuel over time. When it stops, you are left in the near dark and it get quite hard (but not terribly so either) to go back to the town if you are away from a teleporter. In the first game, this was quite an issue as you wanted to keep longer and longer in the mine, so you wanted to upgrade that light. Here, it's not that important and you soon end up with an ever-lasting light, as if the devs decided that this component was best left out of the game after all.

As the focus of SteamWorld Dig 2 is much more placed on the freedom of exploration (and it works!), there is less incentive to get the upgrades. I never felt the urge to play "just a tad longer" to get this alluring upgrade within my reach, which was the main driving force behind the gameplay of the first game. The consequence of this is that SteamWorld Dig 2 is a bit less addictive... but has a lot more depth and delivers a more powerful experience of exploration and discovery. You don't care that much about the pick either because there is less difference in the sturdiness of the blocks as you explore the world (in the first one, the deeper you went, the sturdier were the blocks, forcing you to upgrade continually your pickaxe to avoid spending infinite time digging your into the mine; while it is also true here, you discover all different environments before finishing any of them, so the blocks do not because sturdier after a point early on in the game). Even if the two games are closely similar, this shift of focus alters how you feel playing it -in my opinion for the best.


The thing is, the end kinda tells you that the game should receive another sequel. That's exciting, and the new perspective offered at the end only raises expectation. Yet, there are a few elements which could been significantly improved, in my opinion.

First, the "Hell" level is really frustrating. The game is supposed to be played by a large audience: it's pleasantly easy, and the challenge lies into the exploration more than the pure platforming skills. Therefore, adding a secret level, which rewards hours of exploration, just to tell the player "Eh, you started to thought you were good? Nope, you just suck terribly." is mean. I really disliked it, especially considering that I love to explore, to unlock every secrets, and I had to pass on this one.

Second, the game is much too guided. There is a blue cross which tells you where to go. Fortunately, purchasing the "Sequence breaker" achievement, I strayed away from the main story and explored more freely, and it felt extremely good. I recommend to do it even if it breaks the story and doesn't make really sense (perhaps they should have made alternative dialogues to fix this). Also, the NPCs are pretty much useless (you have sellers and characters you are required to speak to to get further in the main story), while they could have given you fun side quests. I would have loved side quests and the game can easily implement them.

Third, the combat is mostly boring. Since the game is quite easy and you have a lot of health points, you don't really bother and I tended to kill every enemies by running into them. You only have a pickaxe that you have to time precisely and that has no range at all, so it's not really interesting. The hook is nicer in that it allows you to slightly push an enemy. Overall, the fight component is really not deeply thought out, and it has almost no interest in the game.

Fourth, there could always be more exploration! The game already improves a lot compared to the firs SteamWorld Dig. But I would have liked to find more secret rooms, completely useless to the main story, more secret passways, and it would have been cool if the artifacts you hunt for in the game have had a purpose (for instance, additional pieces of lore, not just silly jokes which fall flat for the great majority of them). Side quests could also help having areas unrelated to the main story, while giving a purpose to explore them.

I therefore hope the third SteamWorld Dig will have a more non-linear structure, more secrets, and side quests. Combat is not that crucial to improve since the exploration really is the selling point of the series.

There's a concept that comes up a lot in designing and analyzing video games: the gameplay loop. A gameplay loop is the broad, abstract set of actions the player is frequently performing throughout the game. In Halo, you could say the core loop is entering an area, locating enemies, killing them, and figuring out which way to go next. In Super Mario 64, it's entering a painting, selecting a star, and exploring until you figure out how to get it. Of course, each iteration of this loop might feel vastly different to the player. It's not a bad thing, nor is it a critique, but it's present. I recommend Action Button's review of The Last of Us for much deeper insight into the development of top down cyclical gameplay in a game that does its best to disguise it.

What's interesting is that some games don't even try to hide it, presenting a loop as a matter of fact. This shows up a lot in roguelikes, where the repetitive nature of beginning new runs is central, and it's perhaps most fully embraced by idle and clicker games where the only gameplay involves waiting for time to elapse. It's strange, right? Lots of titles emphasize plot and spectacle and emotion and variance in ways that make it feel like we're constantly experiencing something new, yet there's a certain comfort in the discovery of a routine.

It's that sense of routine that bridges SteamWorld Dig 2 to its predecessor and distinguishes it from other games in its genre. If you haven't played the first, the general premise is that you're a robot in a steampunk western town, digging down into the mine below the city to kill monsters and find resources you can sell on the surface. That right there is your loop: enter the mine, dig in an area you haven't finished digging in yet to find stuff, and return to town when your health runs low or your pockets get full so you can get cash and buy upgrades. But SteamWorld Dig 2 isn't a roguelike - indeed, the mine permanently retains almost all the changes you make to it rather than resetting or randomizing. Rather, it's a Metroidvania (AKA Igavania [AKA Castleroid]). This is where the game shows the most growth from its predecessor, with a fairly large, less linear world to explore and key items allowing access to new areas throughout, and it adds a new wrinkle to the loop: searching for secrets.

Qualitative analysis time: I like the repetition of SWD's game loop. Burrowing deeper and deeper through the mines, discovering new types of ores and enemies and key locations. It's comfortable. And it's also a little personal in the way you can decide how to approach your mining and get used to the tunnels you create. I would probably play a roguelike or pseudo-endless version of this game for longer than I should admit. But the way it combines with the new exploration elements is awkward at times. A big part of this is that you have several distinct mines now rather than just one. Each new mine you enter starts with the weak enemies and low value materials you'll have long since outgrown, and each mine also ends rather unceremoniously. The game's two overworld sections have very little meat or challenge. Because of this, there are portions of the journey where the routine becomes a bit of a chore as you studiously explore in the absence of any real tension, only surfacing because your torch keeps running out, and this is where the overt loopiness of the game flow starts to wear thin. Most Castleroids only draw you back the hub by offering you utility; SWD2 has limited inventory space, limited lantern fuel, and areas so cumbersome to navigate that you'd rather fast travel home and back out to another warp. In practice, I think any one of these would have been enough. With all three, you can only get so much done before that loop kicks in and interrupts your travels.

But the bigger issue from this world structure is the secret-gathering. Deeply hidden secret areas in Metroidvanias can be great; I love Symphony of the Night, and some of the rooms in that castle are pretty obscure. But most Metroidvanias present you with a largely static world to parse and navigate. SWD2 has a few consistent ways in which it telegraphs its secrets, but by asking you to make your own path through the mines it removes its own ability to guide you. As a result, a lot of hidden areas require you to dutifully dig to the edges of the map to check for false walls or breakable blocks, and in low-light areas it's even more difficult to spot. There is an unlockable ability to make these locations easier to spot, but it doesn't come until late in the game and doesn't show on your minimap, meaning you'll still have to scour every inch to see those sparkling blocks. (Or look up a user-made map, which I did for the last five or so secrets I missed.) I should stress, you don't need to do this to beat the game, but a neat postgame challenge is locked behind 100% completion. And the end result is that if you're going for completion without using external help, SWD2 asks for a lot of your time.

Well, a lot of time relative to the overall game length. Unlike some people, I found SWD2 disappointingly short. I beat the game with a fairly high completion percentage in about 10 hours, then spent another few hunting for secrets before using a map to find the remainder and maybe 60-90 minutes on the final secret. I've got 15 hours on file and a solid hour of that was me being AFK, so factor that however you like. The ending also felt a little underbaked, unfortunately. I won't go into details here but the conclusion was so abrupt and brisk that it slightly undercut my previous investment in the world and left me feeling like something was missing.

Let's talk positives, though. Despite my quibbles with the overall flow, the core gameplay loop is still really good for most of the duration. I haven't talked about the puzzles which appear in caves, but they're generally fun and not too tricky. The game's Metroid-style upgrades are satisfyingly powerful and significantly increase your mobility and options in a way I really liked. And the overall gamefeel is pretty nice, with only occasional hiccups in what are otherwise solid physics. On the story side, the writing is fine, if a tad predictable. But my favourite aspect was the cog system. Replacing the linear equipment purchases of SWD1, you unlock blueprints for upgrades to your various abilities. You can toggle these on and off from town, but each one requires a certain number of golden cogs to use, which you find by solving puzzles and discovering secrets. It's effectively the same as the badge system in Paper Mario, except you find badge points in the wild. You're actually given good reasons to change up your loadout for different locations and it encourages going out of your way to try and get extra cogs to kit yourself out. More games should explore this type of progression.

This is the part of the review where you're supposed to tell the audience if the game is worth it, but I don't think that's super useful for indie releases like this. This game regularly goes on sale for $5 or less. If you're reading this, you're probably curious enough to get your money's worth out of it. The real question is whether this game is worth your time, and I'd say... probably? If you liked digging around in the mine in the first game, you'll probably like doing more of that here. And if you're a big Metroidvania fan who's already played the big ones, this is a nice palate cleanser. For anyone new to that genre, there are several games I'd prioritize higher than this one unless the steampunk mining overtone really speaks to you, but SteamWorld Dig 2 is well-polished and more than playable enough to warrant a positive outlook, even if the parts don't come together how I'd like.

Thanks to the developer and publisher of Steamworld Dig 2, Image & Form, for creating an excellent  game for me to escape, explore and enjoy.

The first  games on PC in the Steamworld series, Dig and Heist, were pretty good but like all good developers Image & Form doesn't reinvent the series but they made a good series into a great one by making it better in every way.  Steamworld Dig 2 is a beautiful, addicting, polished and most importantly fun game that is easily one of the best games of the year.

Steamworld Dig 2 is a platform jumping, digging, exploration, action game. You play as Dorthy, an ally from the first Dig game, who is trying to find her friend Rusty. While looking for Rusty you are also hired to help out the local town in trying to find the answers behind mysterious earthquakes. If new to the series, the world of Steamword Dig is set in a steampunk western setting that is inhabited solely by robots. Language is incoherent but the look of each character and their dialouge exlemphies each ones personality. The story is simple to follow and not a burden and was I surprised by the emotional ending.  

In the game you will be exploring a pretty massive underground world. There are a lot of diverse environments to explore and each with their share of treasures, challenges, hazards and enemies. At first you will only be given your trusty pickaxe but later tools including a jack hammer, water cannon, hookshot and the best accessory ever, the jetpack will be awarded for completing missions. All of these awesome tools are upgradeable with cash earned from excavating  gems and additional features are upgraded with cogs. Cogs for the most part are in secret areas or in puzzle rooms scattered around the map. There is also a vendor in town who sells cogs but its unnecessary to ever purchase any. There are also secret objects(42 total) that when a certain number is found you will be rewarded with a blueprint. These also unlock additional upgrades for your equipment. All of this is so rewarding and returning to the store with a full backpack of gems never gets old. I will say its kind of a slow start as the opening level gems in the area do not pay, but once you go deeper unlocks begin to happen more frequently.   

Graphically Steamworld Dig 2 looks beautiful and ran perfectly at 1080P(Ultrawide) max settings. Its almost looks like a bright shiny saturday cartoon and movement and controls are excellent. Sound is also really good especially when hitting away at all those rocks, enemies and that rewarding sound of when collecting coins. The soundtrack is also impressive though near the end i was a little tired of the one track that plays constantly when you are just simply exploring.

Steamworld Dig 2 is a rare game on the PC that achieves the unthinkable and thats the deserving rating of polished. Its execution, gameplay, controls, levels and world are near flawless. Its probably the best released game i've played in recent memory without any needed patch or DLC needed. One of the best games this year, easily.

Getting 100% was... very fun in this cute metroid-vania where you basically act as your own level designer.

This game has some of the best Quality of life I've seen. It's extremely enjoyable and the 100% journey is challenging but not too problematic. Wholeheartedly recommend this one.

A textbook example of what a good sequel should be. It has better graphics, better music, expands on the upgrade system and gives you new tools to play with while removing the frustrating aspects of the first game. Another outstanding game by Image & Form. Definitely a must buy if you liked the first one.

I wish for SteamWorld Dig 3

SteamWorld Dig 2 is everything that I wanted from the first game and more, from the story, music, atmosphere, gameplay and level design all comes together to make a very fun and addicting experience. In the game you play as Dot, a robot who’s goal is to find her friend Rusty and to discover what is causing many dangerous earthquakes in the valley. Along the way you will meet fellow bots to help guide you on your adventure.

Image & Form really stepped their game up with this one, they’ve listened to the complaints with the first game and made sure not to make similar mistakes, for that I applaud them. All the hard work created a beautiful and mechanically satisfying masterpiece. SteamWorld Dig 2 plays a lot like a Metroid style of gameplay except with ya know digging, you can explore and make bank or stick to the main story at hand, it is up to you and your playstyle.

Oh boy the music in this game, let me tell ya, it’s real nice. Walking into the hubworld for the first time made my ears dab with elation. A lot of tracks in the game fit the locations and atmosphere perfectly, at least it gives you an incentive to keep your lamp aflame when digging, if ya don’t then things can get a bit spooky, real quick. The visuals they’re great, just look at the trailer and see for yourself, they’re freaking gorgeous. There are some sections in the game that made me stop and go “whoa that looks insane” and I’m sure others would agree when seeing it for the first time.

Difficulty isn’t too high, however, it is much higher than the previous game forsure. Enemies in this game actually have attacks and can feel threatening when encountering them for the first time which is pretty awesome. There is a place from the previous game that has been completely reimagined for SWD2 and holy cow the enemies in that level scared the bolts out of me, I had no idea I was stepping into Resident Evil: Robot Edition. Was a really terrifying and badass experience, had me on edge the entire time.

-Much longer than the first game if you 100% everything
-Upgrades, lots and lots of upgrades
-Did I mention Graphics? Cause those are pretty darn good
-Collectables with hilarious descriptions to find

-Some platform sections can be a bit confusing on where to go
-Still wish it was tad more difficult but that’s just me
-Should be a stat screen after beating the game to help speedrunners
-Fen ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Conclusion:
Do I recommend this game? Absolutely, this one is far more superior than it’s predecessor in every way shape and form. Image & Form said “YOLO” and put all the effort into this game. These guys really knocked it out of the park and I hope their future projects are as fun as this one.

This sequel is much more refined than its predecessor, and there's much more to do here. More time and effort have been put into every facet of the original's template to flesh out Steamworld Dig 2 into a stronger Metroidvania. There are more abilities to find, better visuals, a better soundtrack, a decent story, and a bunch of well-hidden collectibles, too. The final boss is a big improvement on that of the first game. There are many more puzzles than there were in Dig, which is a nice change of pace from the usual digging gameplay. I enjoyed the movement abilities you picked up along the way, which made getting around fun. Overall, there's just more meat on the bones in Dig 2. That said, the story ends abruptly; the combat is still weak, and a couple of extra boss fights to shake things up would've been nice. Getting all the collectibles isn't worth it, and as I was trying to find them all after finishing the main story, I found it a little annoying, but this is optional, and it was alright. In the case of Steamworld Dig 2, bigger is better, and this is a great sequel that's even more fun than the first game.
