Is this a bug? Couldn't get the drake sword

When I went under the bridge where you avoid the red dragon, I decided to use my bow to get the drake sword. But it said I didn't have the stats to use the bow efficiency, I used it anyway to hit the dragon's tail but I didn't get the drake sword. So I thought I was doing it wrong and farm for some souls till i got the stats needed to use the bow. But by my luck the dragon stopped showing up after I crossed the bridge a couple of times, he then came back but I thought it was odd. So this time I used the bow to attack the tail and still no drake sword. At that point I gave up, killed the gargoyles, rang the bell, and was about to fight the capra demon. I later found a cross bow and saw a video where the guy got the drake sword by using the cross bow. When I did it I still got no drake sword. At this point I didn't care for the sword or needed it since I found what seemed to be better weapons. But I wanted to make this thread just in case anyone else is dealing with this issues and this bug should be fixed. If not a bug and I just did it wrong, i'm okay with that and will learn not to do what I did in my previous play through.

just to make sure: did you actually ever sever the tail of the drake?
you'll need about 20-40 hits for that.

No the tail stayed on, thanks for telling me. I thought you just had to hit the tail with an arrow and get the sword.

you have to hit it very often and if you do it without the stats you probably will run out of ammo before you succeed.

it's also hidden for a reason, it has low reach and poor moveset for fancy power attacks - which got balanced out only a little by decent base dmg which does not scale with your stats - tl;dr: grab that claymore on the ground instead and move on

tbh its not worth it, go get the zweihander its way better

You really, really don't want to waste any upgrade materials on that sword.
