DOTA 1 came first as a mod for Warcraft 3, then two guys split off from the DOTA team and made LoL. Since DOTA was a mod, they couldn't sue League (I don't know if they wanted to, but they couldn't). After they made League, VALVE came to IceFrog (The original maker of DOTA, and no, no one actually knows his real name) and together they made DOTA 2. If you ask me, DOTA 2 is FAR better, but people play both.
