Low priority queue encourages continuous bad behaviour
As of this writing, i have 7207 days in the low priority queue. This number increases by about 7-30 days a day. That's nearly 20 years (and increasing) of low priority queue for me. Now imagine if tomorrow i decide to turn over a new leaf and decide to be a good boy. I need to wait 20 years before i can climb out of this hole. Think i would do that? Think anyone would do that? Heck, you don't even need 20 years of low priority queue to know that that is too daunting a feat to try and attain. Probably one month of low priority queue is enough.

Pros of low priority queue:
- Freedom to play just the way i like it.
a) Feeder in my team? Quit.
b) I am feeding? Quit.
c) Losing? Quit.
d) Need to take a dump mid game? Quit.
e) Teammates behaving badly? Quit.
f) Need or feel like quitting for any other reason, trivial or otherwise? Just quit.
g) Want to scold a teammate for being noob? Want to verbally defend yourself against bad teammates who blame you for everything? Let it rip!

Cons:
- Longer wait time (not a big con because i always alt tab to do other things while waiting anyway)
- Cannot gain steam-dota 2 level or items (if you don't care about these then its not a con. Besides, if you were used to dota 1, there weren't any items or levels either).

I didn't start out playing dota 2 aiming to get the highest no. of days in the low priority queue though. Like most ppl, i wanted to play properly. Every once in a while though, some jack4ss will come in and start quarrels. Eg. some fellow demands that you buy the courier, or demands that you do this and that, you refuse and get into a quarrel, soon the whole team is pulled into the quarrel. Or if they die they blame you for not coming to their aid, or not reporting, etc. There are 101 reasons why people start quarrels in dota 2 and sometimes its not even a quarrel started by you. Regardless of who started what or who's right or wrong, /reports get thrown around up down left right center and the next thing you know, you've got a 3 or 7 days low priority q, which is pretty long if you play dota everyday.

If im in the queue for 3 to 7 days, perhaps i might be 'encouraged' to be nice to get out of the q, since 3 to 7 days, while long, doesn't seem like an unattainable goal. If it becomes 14 days or more though, it just seems so far away that i might as well enjoy the 'benefits' of the low priority q (ie. freedom to quit/scold players whenever you like) and carry on being 'bad' because 14 days is just too far off, let alone 60 days or 7207 days.

Furthermore, a 3 days low priority queue works just as well as a 9999999 days low priority queue for the purpose of keeping the 'bad' player away from the 'nice' ones. If the 'bad' player continues to be bad, he will continue to stay in the low priority queue.

In the end, Valve must ask itself, what is the purpose of the low priority queue?
1) To keep bad players away from nice ones <this purpose is met>
2) To encourage bad players to 'repent' and become good <this objective is unmet because of the reasons stated above.>

TLDR:
Low priority queue promotes bad behaviour because once you're in the queue for too long a time (maybe 14 or 30 days), it just seems too far away for you to get out of. Instead of trying to be 'nicer', you end up playing the game the way you like, which may be deemed 'disruptive' and ignoring the low priority queue altogether.

Low priority queue should be limited to at most, 14 days (this no. can be tweaked to Valve's liking but i feel that 7 days is the optimal time. Long enough for someone to be kept away from 'nice' players and to 'repent', but not so long that it seems impossible to get out of).

The LP keeps the "bad" players apart from the "good" ones , what else could anyone ask for.

People like you that do not care about leaving and such should be apart , you ruin games.

Honestly , we got jails , that is where you punish people, taking them from the normal society , should we close all the jails because 5% of the prisoners do not care if they get arrested and sent there? Guess you will agree with the no.

You dont remove the punishment because part of the people dont recover, some still do , and to those who dont ... well , they wont be a problem for the people who actually follow the rules.
and what about the guy that went to jail because he stole a couple candy bars from the shop cause he was hungry he gets throwen in with all the gangsters and drugys and gets pulled into that society. U might go to low priority because u dced a couple by acciedent sure u should go to low priorty but when u go there and people are always abusive and u get draged into arguments get reported or leave and get banned more. thats why i think there needs to be a limit and people should get banned for a period of time if that continues then after the ban they are given a second chance.

Im not looking for sympathy (they're worthless anyway). Just providing my feedback on how to improve this system.

I don't really get OP, if u play like a ♥♥♥♥ (no offense) and enjoy doing so while in LPQ, how does changing the LPQ punishment change anything ? Even if valve decides to perm ban anyone who exceeds x number of days, the "bad" player can make another account and play is normal queue...

Hell I bet players in LPQ are using alternate accounts to play and get items so they can transfer back to their 'main' accounts...

Low Priority Queue - Greatest invention of all.

Grouping trolls/idiots/psycho/bad-tempered into an isolated jail where the only one they can bring harms to is their own kind, and letting the good fellows have some peace.

No chance to become good again? You ever see a murderer in jail complains about being unable to live normally because all the guys around him are jerks? This is what you deserve! If you cannot behave yourself in the said period LPQ is where you belong.

Seriously you should be glad that you can still play DOTA2 and not being ban immediately. 7207 days LQP, lol do the gaming community a favor and never touch any multiplayer games please OP. :blech:

I want to try normal PQ for a change after having spent the last few mths in LPQ. That's all. But apparently i need to wait for dota 13 (11 more dota games to go) for my time to be resetted lol.

Why not just stick all low priorities together? Problem solved

I feel bad for you bro.

I don't usually go into low prio (once a month maybe) but if I do for some reason, I play from a nother acc till the days subside. 3 days of low prio for one abandon + report is not very viable and the fact that it stacks and multiplies is also a problem.

The low priority system is more like jail, except it's worse. If you get a prison sentence for 30 years you feel like crap and you dont want to improve cause its far away, but since you are locked up you cant do anything about it. But in low priority the people stuck there spread the hatred and create tears in the dota 2 society. I'd rather be banned for a day than have low prio for a week.

And then they match you with complete feeders if you are low prio. Tell me, if I have 800+ hours of game with me and I go to low prio for some reason, is it justified to make me play with total losers who can't even get their game straight? Or communicate? What a waste of my time. BOO VOLVO BOO!

If valve wasn't so busy with making sets and kissing butthurt TongFu fan's arses (removing fountain hook), they could have tried to make a better system.

As has been posted previously:

If you're in low priority you'll get a message telling you that you're in low priority.

If someone declines a game you're queued for, you will be given high priority until you successfully find a game (or stop searching). HP is the same as normal except you will find a game faster.

If neither of the above apply you are normal priority.

It's hardly surprising that there are a lot of poor players in low priority. A lot of people are there because they like to abuse their teammates and ragequit unless everything goes their way.

This is obviously bad for communication, but also prevents them learning the game. You can't learn from your mistakes if you blame everything on other people, and you can't learn to deal with a challenge if you quit whenever you're not winning effortlessly.

Also, given the tendency for people in LPQ to blame everything on their team, half your teammates are probably saying the same thing about you. :P

To get that many days of Low-Priority you must be doing something heinous.

I would like to see some data on all of this, as I think it would be interesting to see if people who are in the low queue ever "reform" or if it continued the problem by grouping with disruptive people. Could be an interesting social experiment, is punishment like this linked to learning better behavior. The only players that truly annoy me are people who leave as soon as they or someone else makes a mistake. In most games its really awesome to bring it back and win from being down, but I also understand the length of the games means losing can take up to 30 minutes, and 30 minutes of being beaten is no fun for anyone.

I partially agree, your analysis is correct but your solution is flawed. Instead of setting a rather low cap for LP players that continue being toxic should be banned permanently and all its DotA 2 related items should be deleted instead.

Agreed.
