How do you lock the camera on your hero?
Hey, I just recently started playing Dota 2. Like a lot of others, I used to play League of Legends. In LoL, there was a hotkey you could press to make the camera constantly lock onto your champion, so they would always be in the center of your screen and you wouldn't miss anything. I got used to playing on fixed-camera mode, and am having difficulty trying to adjust. I've scanned the settings menus, and didn't find anything similar to this at all. It was a really convenient feature in LoL, and not having it makes it tough for me to want to keep playing.

Is there a similiar option like this in Dota 2? There's always the possibility that I missed it in the settings menu, but I did look through it pretty thoroughly. Thanks in advance for your help.

I realize this thread is necro'd but I felt a burning desire to respond to this anyway.

It kinda is the exact definition of noobish- with practice there is nothing that actually requires the camera to be locked on your hero. Watch a video of some of the higher-level players like Purge and you'll see he has no problems creep-blocking whatsoever.

The camera-lock might act like training wheels when you are first starting out, but if you use it for to long it becomes a crutch you can't function without, and there's no good way to break players of bad habits.

I Unlock my camera to use global ults then when im done casting i return to locked mode in LoL. if theres an enemy thats on the corner of my screen, i sometimes unlock to get a better view. I don't scroll down anywhere, I see what happens by pressing the hotkey for lock/unlock camera and clicking on the minimap.

Lock the screen on hero? that's the dumbest thing to do, in Dota you need to be aware of your surroundings too

Well I play LoL and I want to get into Dota, however I use both unlocked and locked. Do you think there's a way to bind spacebar to "temporary" lock the screen, not toggle.

Cause I might be looking far away and I dont want to click the map to move back to my hero.

I want to make it so I can quickly look back at my hero by pressing spacebar, that's what I do on LoL. But reading Etagloc's post, that is so damn helpful from the hating comments.

Thanks Etagloe for your post. I think that's what he wanted. C'ya everyone.

By default double tapping and holding your select hero button will keep the camera locked as long as the select hero button is held, just bind select hero to spacebar.

Unfortunately the console command to add delay to a bind was removed from the source engine a long time ago due to bhop scripts in counter strike so having a key that locks for a short duration then unlocks is impossible as far as I know.

I started playing this game yesterday and this is causing me a lot of problems. I understand that it is not ideal but I am honestly disadvantaged without a locked camera. As I am learning this game, there are so many things to keep track of: the different UI, what abilities to use, killing creeps, my health and mana, what is going on in the map, buying items from the shop, new abilities from items, how much health items I have left, etc. The problem with an unlocked camera is that, when I get into combat as a mage (Invoker, Skywrath, etc.), I have to maintain my distance or I will get destroyed (the combat is so freaking fast!). I'm sure you can understand that I get a little panicky in these situations and my camera ends up somewhere in the jungle while my mage is back getting destroyed near a tower and dead before I can move my camera back. It's frustrating that Valve thinks they know what is best for me.
