Dota 2
Stop bad games from being misreble. Force finish.
I am fully aware that I am a marginal player at best. I like playing, and I accept losing. It's part of life. You win some, and you lose some.

I have no problem losing. But sometimes, the game becomes absolutely MISERABLE. A game should never be absolutely miserable to play. For example, those of us who play TF2, know that sometimes you lose. But even when you lose, it's not miserable, because the game ends. Even if your team is being dominated, you can still fight to some extent, and if the other team, doesn't win the game, the time will run out, and they will lose.

Unfortunately.... this is not the case with DOTA 2.

I recently played a game where at 25 minutes, the score was I think 8 to 50. They had 50 points, and we were still in single digits.

Again.... I don't have a problem losing. What I do have a problem with is that game did not finish until 45 minutes. The other team refused to push the lanes. They refused to attack our towers. The simply waited for us to come out of our base, and slaughtered us.

But it didn't end there even. For the last 10 full minutes of the game, they sat around our spawn, hooking, and nuking us at our spawn.... again, they didn't attack our towers, nor did they wipe out our baracks. They didn't even try to finish the game, they just sat there slaughtering us over and over.

This was the worst example, but I've had several where our team had absolutely no change at all, and yet the other team dragged it out for 10 to 20 minutes longer than needed.

When you can still fight, the game is fun. But when it gets to the point that 1 person on their team, can solo 3 people on your team, and win.... the game is no longer fun. No game if fun when you have absolutely no possible chance of winning.

Now I realize that some people enjoy just camping the spawn point for no reason. I have never gotten that, but I get they enjoy it. But it's miserable for the losers. MISERABLE.

Therefore, I suggest a way to force the finish of the game.

Put a small button at the top of the screen someplace out of the way, with a white flag. Have next to the white flag button, a counter ' Flag X 0 '.

When someone presses the white flag button, it changes to ' Flag X 1 ' and then " Flag X 2 " and so on until 3 or 4 people want to surrender.

No one knows who hit their surrender button. No names, no yelling at people, just a Flag X (number) to tell everyone how many wish to surrender. No obligations either.

Why only 3 or 4? Because you know that if it required all 5 people, there would be one jerk on the team who would refused to surrender, for no other reason than to piss everyone else on the team off, by forcing them to stick around when they don't want to play.

What happens when 3 or 4 people press the white flag button?

One of two things.

A: the base explodes instantly, it goes to the victory screen, and the game is over.

B: you can at least make it safe for people ON THAT TEAM to leave. So the three people who want to go find another game they actually have a chance at winning, can do so. And the 1 guy, or 2 guys that want to fight a hopeless battle for then next 20 minutes, can keep playing.

I'm personally in favor of A. But some people actually seem to enjoy a hopeless fight. At least allow those of us who don't want to waste 20 minutes of our lives, in a game they have no hope of scoring a point, let alone winning, to leave the game without penalty, if a majority of players agree to surrender.

I enjoyed your post, and you make several good points. Many other players agree with you that, in a large sense, some games simply cannot be won.
totally agreed, some games turn into a boring and slowly slaughter of your team,
and u can only sit there waiting to lose :|

This is actually a really good post. But I think you should copy and paste this to a dev's twitter, or to a dev forum. Because their would be a very little chance a dev will see this on this forum. If you really want to go that far with your post.

I understand where you're coming from, but a surrender option in this game would break it. I see a LOT of players that just flatout give up if they lose first blood, or ONE teamfight goes wrong, or they get ganked ONCE.

If one barracks goes down, even if we have the ability to turn it around with care, I will see people just give up and sit in the spawn complaining the rest of the game.

It happens a LOT, and for me we end up winning a good number of these games that are claimed to be "over" by said player(s).

If a feature like this was implemented it would only cause more frustration and anger because these players would all instantly hit the flag button that you suggested, even if it is only one minute into the game and far too early to call.

Yeah I had some games where the games completely turns around in one teamfight and we win. But when you know you are so far behind like you are level 12 and on the other team there is a level 25 just camping at spawn then I think a surrender button would be fine. The pros do it, so why can't we have one in pub games?

If I remember correctly from the previous International, they didn't have a surrender. They just gave up and sat in the spawn in one of the matches.

I could be wrong though, it was a while ago.

In pro games all the players leave, so the game ends since the game is safe to leave. Or just watch a recent pro game.

Good post!

A system like a "End Game Vote". So players can vote for the game ends and win the team with more stats or something like that...

Though I support the idea, like what League of Legends does, I think that Valve might be accused of being a copy-cat of LoL if they made a similar surrender option. Also, they've changed very little from the original WC3 TFT DotA, and I think they may be trying to keep it the same as the original, rather than changing it too much away from the Warcraft 3 DotA.

I don't like the end game vote. Indeed, on dota the game is never over if you've extra late hero and good turtle strategy. Yep, i've a replay that i kept where we were loosing 40 - 7 and we won finally ! Just a great teamplay, a good smoke, a nice def, you can win whatever happened before.

I agree that ur idea can be good, but if you've idiots in your team and u know that u can win and they are 3 to agree to end this, you're screwed :/

For me it's a simple "no". If you asked me this 2 years ago, i would accept but more you get exeperience on this game and more you'll realise that fast finish can be as much horrible as losing a game 20 min latter than expected

so Riot have copyrighted a surrender option? Yeah maybe they just want to keep it the same to the WC3 dota so they don't want to add one. But like I said before the pros do it, so why can't we have one in pub games?

Sometimes the team that is winning the game never ends because they want to have the best items... Sometimes the game ends 10-20 mins later...

The problem can often be avoided if your whole team afk base for couple of mins until they bore of woods. Sucks but its an alternative :/

a surrender option implemented well would be great once its becomes a total pummeling dragged out.
