It's running, but not showing.

Everytime I start Dota 2 it will open and show on my taskbar, I can even hear music, but I can't see it or open a window. Any ideas? I have Windows 7 64-bit, GeForce GTS 450, Core i3 Processor, and RAM out the wazoo.

Hey I don't know if this is what you are experiencing but when I launched my dota I could see that it is running and even here the game music but nothing shows on my screen so after hours of searching and finding no fix I started to try and fix it myself and this is what I did.

Go to

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\dota 2 beta\game\dota\cfg

in this cfg file go to your video "text document"

"setting.fullscreen" "1"

change the "1" to "0"

Launch the game and see if it opens if it does then just go to your in game settings and change your display settings to full screen again.

This worked for me hope it does for you to.

Here is my problem and solution.

My Dota launches, screen is black for a second and then it just shows the Dota icon in the taskbar.

My only workaround is to use the 32Bit Dota and not the 64Bit Dota.

Go to steamapps\common\dota 2 beta\game\bin\win32 and launch Dota from there while steam is open.

Try verifying the integrity files after every update. It works for me.


Or try by lower your video settings and also changing your fps to 30 to avoid the game screen from disappearing. You can do it in the console, I'm still facing the same problem until now. Hope it helps you for now until DoTA 2 developers can issue a fix.

i am playing dota 2 on this laptop since last 4 years. I also problem just last week. I was in game and then it hung and when i restarted , i could only hear the music and see the cursor. It is definetly running in the background . But i cant see any thing. I tried every damn thing ranging from launch optiions, uninstalling msi after burner , overclock , underclock , changing video settings everything . But nothing works. At first , i thought it must be a graphic card problem on my pc.But other games like cs go , assasins creed black flag, dino d-day etc works perfectly fine. I dont know what's wrong. Does any one have any other option for solving this problem? Please help Thanks

Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, and find dota2.exe if it ever happens again.

try this, right click dota 2 then click properties, then click set launch options then type "-autoconfig" the click ok then lauch dota 2 thats about it, worked on me
