Epic fail. I don't know. Maybe do a file veritication through Steam?
I need a key ,thank you very much
same problem for me.. can anyone suggest a way to rectify this??
Go to steam apps folder and try to launch dota2.exe and see if it comes up with error. If so, post error here.

Note I am talking about browsing to the actual EXE, not launching from steam.

re verify the product
u need a key to play real dota
no error from dota.exe ..it launches perfectly..
anyways i downloaded 3.1gb again!!!
i think the solution for this is wait for a update from steam whenever this happens
1. Open Library.
2. Right click Dota 2 -> Properties -> Local Files
3. Click "Verify Integrity of Game Cache"
doesnt work ... when it says install
I was having the same issue - In the main menu of the Steam Launcher -> Upper Left corner (Steam) -> Settings -> Downloads - > Steam Library Folders -> Add (And add the folder where are the Steam files (my files are not in C, they are in E)) :) Good Luck
Have you tryed turning it off and back on again?
ya .. did everythin ..nthn worked thn i reinstalled it :/
Verify integrity and game cache
@Little Wolf: when the Steam client "forgets" that it has already installed a game, that option is grayed out. Actually, every button in Properties > Local Files is grayed out. And Steam reports disk usage as "none".

I am having the same problem as the OP with Left 4 Dead. Purchased L4D and L4D2 on Thursday, benefiting from the July 4 weekend sale, started downloading the former on Friday. Slow connection, the download was over only on Saturday. Played once I believe that day. On Sunday, when I launched the game for the second time, the Steam client said it had to convert some files or their format, can't remember. This was the first thing that surprised me: how come the files downloaded just the day before couldn't have already been in the appropriate format? Anyway, it downloaded whatever was to download, which took forever, and converted whatever was to convert. It then proceeded to launch the game for the second time.

A few hours later, I installed some unrelated software that required my system to reboot. Since that reboot, the Steam client has lost track of the fact that L4D is already downloaded. When I launch ...\Steam\SteamApps\common\left 4 dead\left4dead.exe, everything runs fine: I don't get any error messages! (Tried it again while writing this message.)

But somehow, which is a baffling inconsistency, the client shows both the total time I've spent playing the game and the achievements I've unlocked, including AFTER the client "lost track" of L4D, but the action button still reads "Install" instead of "Play". Of course, all labels are in French so my speculative translation into English might not be 100% accurate.
STEAM > SETTINGS > DOWNLOADS > STEAM LIBRARY FOLDERS > ADD THE FOLDER WHERE THE GAME WAS PREVIOUSLY INSTALLED.
