I thought it was a change related to Blizzard's copyright spree. Valve was going to change Skeleton King to a ghoul named Wraith King to avoid trademark problems.

Again this is speculation based on recent events and theories by the community but everything seems to be happening as predicted so far.

What about Ogre magi and the other heroes? If they had a problem with copyright they would have changed them all by now.

there are nothing to do any copyright of blizzard because they simply dont care, if it was the cause invoker should be completly removed from game along with his floating balls.
btw lina is also character from anime "slayers" - "lina inverse", same with drow belong to d&d.

ps chinese client have actually censored all skeletons, alon with long nails, tusks, blood etc.

if he was changed to wraith king it was more ripoff of copyright because in diablo 3 there is wraith of king leoric.

The name reminds me a little bit of "Lich King" from the WoW games. I know that DotA split off from Warfcraft before it became "world of" but since both series have their roots in the same place, maybe it's intended to be a homage/parody/something-else related?
