How does it feel stupid to have to learn multiple/every hero in Dota? It's all part of the huge learning curve. "I don't want to learn, wah!" is what I basically heard from you.
You can't easily 'main' unless you want to stay in the lower brackets, as team composition is incredible important.
But by no means do you ahve to learn every hero, just one or two i each role.
Simply put Dota is a team game, moreso than LoL (wait for the rage on that one), and unless you are playing with 4 buddies every game having 1 "go to" guy wont cut it, in fact it will most likely hold everyone back.
Nothing worse than all 5 pubs having a "go to" and they are all carries, learn to fill whatevers needed is the best way.
Or alternatively play with nothing but friends, then chose a role you are great at and learn 2-3 heroes just for that role.
I personally only play when i have at least 1 of my friends in my team, he is great on any carry you throw at him, and i know how he plays and what he needs so i play support, 9/10 we carry the team.
You need to know what each of them can do , even if you are not able to do it yourself.
After that , yes , you can learn a much, much smaller set of heroes to actually use. I would not say one ... cause well , that is not going to end well, but im sure you can work your way around 5 to 10 or so heroes. Maybe it wont be perfect , but should work well enough if you focus on one position only.
PS: Also , you can be just THAT GOOD, and be like admiral bulldog , who became a pro only being able to play 1 hero , lone druid. He then ofc learned to play a few more , but even now not that many. He is just that good. Are YOU?
And the reason im asking is not because i dont want to learn, i want to learn dota, and i dont want dota to be like LoL, because i switched due to LoL just being an inferior game. But i am the person that feels better when i have a hero i know i can play alot of times, and if i dont know anyone else to pick, i can pick that one.
That's what I do.
