Coming in from LoL, advice on heroes?
While I haven't exactly gotten bored of League, I wanted to try something else, and decided DotA 2 might be a good start. I've played a few matches already, and the game is of course very different. I wondered if you guys maybe had advice for me? Like, what heroes should I try, for instance?

So, for example, in League I main support, and I usually play Janna, Sona, Soraka, Leona, or Orianna support.

For those not really familiar with those champions, Janna is a peel-based support, with a chargable, ranged, skill-shot knockup, a slow, an AoE knock-back ultimate with healing, and a shield which also gives the Carry you are laning with more power. She has a passive movespeed buff, and the same from another ability.

Sona has high poke, high ultility via heals and auras , an ability which speeds up nearby champions, and a massive AoE skillshot stun, if somewhat sort range. She is, however, fairly squishy - in fact, she has one of the lowest health bars at level one.

Leona is more of a playmaking, tanky support. She has an auto-attack buff as her first ability to make the next attack stun. She has increase her Armor (and Magic Resist, though that isn't a thing in DotA as far as I can tell), and has an ability that pulls her to the enemy (her main initiating ability). Her ultimate is a large circular AoE ability that stuns all enemies in it's center, and slows for 80% anywhere else in the circle.

I highly doubt there are any heroes in DotA similar to Orianna.

Well, that's all I really have to say. Can you guys give me some help as to who to pick up?

Well, to my limeted knowledge of LoL and my better knowledge of DOTA, I can almost say none of our heroes are like those champs.

Although, these are great supports to get into the game:

Crystal Maiden: She has a stun, a nuke that also slow the enemies, an aura to increase mana regen and an AoE channeled nuke.

Witch Doctor: A stun that bounces off enemies, a AoE togglable heal, an ability that does more damage for every point of health missing since the start of that ability and an chanelled ultimate which summons an uncontrolable, stationary unit that does damage to a sinlge enemy (An item called Aghanim's Sceptre makes the damage bounce to nearby enemies)

Lion: A skillshot stun that stuns all along its path, an ability to change an enemy into an animal (This is called a "hex" and hexes silences and disables attacks), a mana drain and a huge single target nuke (Which can be turned into AoE by Aghanim's Sceptre.)

Dazzle, lich and lion are nice ones to start out with, support wise.

Dazzle has Poison Touch- an ability that slows and dots the enemy over time, when you max it out, the target will slow down so much he gets a little stunned.
He has an ability called Shallow Grave- you put the grave on an ally, covering them and stopping them from dying for about 5 seconds (I think it was), be careful how you use it, don't put it on someone at 50% health (for example) unless you know they're not gonna make it out alive.
His third ability, is a heal. It's a chain heal with does damage to enemies that are standing nearby when you chainheal.
And his ulti, weave, you put an AOE around the targetted area, which depending on who it hits:
Gives bonus armor which increases over time to allies
Gives minus armor which increases over time to enemies

Lich:
His Q is his nuke, dishes out a bit of damage, and slowing the target
His W is frost armor, anyone who's affected by this, when hit, slows the enemy (It can also be cast on towers as of recent!)
His E is sacrifice: You eat a creep, more or less, to deny a last hit/experience to the enemy. Depending on what creep you eat, what health the creep has, you get more mana. So the more health the creep has, the more the mana you get back.
His R: Think Brand's ulti, but better.

Lion:
His Q is a stun, you can target the enemy or ground-target to make it travel further (I think?)
His W is a hex, you turn the enemy into a frog for a few seconds, depending on how much you've leveled hex.
His E is a mana drain, target a guy with a mana pool (some creeps dont have, or in your case, "minions")- and you reduce the amount of mana they have, ofcourse.
His R is a high magical nuke, it dishes out a lot of damage, more than likely forcing the enemy to go back, or die :D

Hope this helped, sorry for the wall of text, have a cookie- oh. I don't have any. Have fun!

I would like to suggest also, drew ranger, why because she can slow you with her ice attack a passive + bonus attack and silence. You can also try sven melee type unit with stun and x2 ulti damage.

He said he like supports.

I have doubts about Sven support and don't like the idea of Drow Ranger support.

False you can control WD's death ward, same as Shadow Shamans, or Veno's wards you can control who they shoot as long as they are in range.

I have a guide up called "Overpowered Heroes and You!" which is a list of some of the games most overpowered heroes.
Morgulje Jan 6, 2015 @ 2:04am
I say that you try first playing supports, and later carry. Becouse when you play carry you need to now how to farm with certain heroes, which is contribute for a win. If you play support, you help with wards and dusts, and also secure the win, but first you need to now some fundimental things, like moving, attacking, stacking...my suggestion for you is to play support and begging - Dazzle, Lich, Witch Doctor, Phoenix...these are all heroes that you want to try when you start playing Dota 2.
