If I am correct, doesn't it inflict magic damage? Black King Bar could help at mid game.

Anything that interrupts channeling. Stuns, for example.

it is one of the rare ults that deal physical damage so increasing armor can help and having a stun is good.

Dazzle, his ult gives you armor. WD can go bkb if you have a lot of stuns, honestly the best counter to his ult is Silencer with His ult

omni's ult, nuking him to death, stun, euls, hex... no secret at all.
if he uses bkb before, unless you have someone able to go through his magic immunity or tank the hits, just stay away.

Ghost scepter if you are a support and you get zoned out unable to use any of your spells or armor and lots of it if you are a tank/carry ( ac/shiva )
I think Vanguard/Crimson guard also works against Death Ward
