It was copyright problems. I can't find a official statement saying this but this basically covers why.

From the Dota 2 Skeleton King wiki: "Leoric was a recurring boss in the Diablo franchise, another game made by Blizzard. He is an iconic boss in Diablo; he reprises his role in Diablo III, through the alias "Skeleton King.""

- Skeleton King: Removed for pressing ceremonial reasons

the reason was not stated correctly. means its an copyright issue

Yeah I know it was copyright but I couldn't actually find an official statement of it. Just the ceremonial but that's not really the 'evidence' OP wants I think.

Valve didn't want to get sued so they took the initiative and changed him before anything could happen

Skeleton King was already in Diablo 1.

It was infact changed as Skeleton King was a copy of Blizzard's skeleton king, Leoric, so Valve took the opportunity to change that before they got taken to court by Blizzard -again- (Which by the way, Blizz failed to win in that court meeting- it was over the name of "Dota" which Blizz wanted for their now "Heroes of the Storm", since they thought they owned rights to it.)
But yeah, thats why they changed Windrunner and Necrolyte's names to Windranger and Necrophos- because Blizz uses those names, and they're special little snowflakes.
