Gem will allow you to kill Riki before he is able to deploy the smoke.
Besides, gem is always a risky purchase. If you throw it you can harm team mates who picked invis heroes or purchased Shadow blade.
A fed Riki will have Abyssal Blade by the time you get your MKB so you'll not be hitting him anyway in a 1v1. Not that I think MKB is a bad pickup vs Riki but more in a teamfight perspective. Solo you die to him, that's just the nature of the hero.
And if you buy MKB only because of smokescreen you also deserve to lose.
Every Riki reies on backstab. . . MKB doesnt let him use his most vital skill. . !
Wasting 5400 gold just because of a miss chance on a small aoe is throwing the game. If they have something like a brewmaster maybe, and ill still rather get a bkb because you know, brewmaster.
I never go MoM (unnecessary risk on Riki IMHO) but Abyssal is core. Your agility doesn't help if they do not turn their back. 2 seconds abyssal stun ensure they do. Plus it helps loads with enemy bkb carries that would stun you themselves otherwise (e.g. troll bashwarlord).
MKB does nothing to prevent backstabs...
