Haven't watched the whole video myself but I think it should answer your question:

Gambler was widely considered to be one of the most imbalanced heroes ever to exist and he was removed from the game. This was back in 5.xx days so before most people heard of DotA.

5.xx is when Guinsoo was in control and the game was called DotA Allstars. Icefrog started the legacy of 6.xx patches and is recognized for having a much better perspective about balance than Guinsoo ever did.

It was in the 6.00 patch he was added.

I think he could be balanced for the actual standard, but need a lot of test to be well balanced

he stayed only for 6 month in 2005 really imbalanced luck and gold hero
NIGHTMARE May 26, 2015 @ 5:19am
i think balencing this hero was better than removing it making his luck similar ti that of ogre and gold similar to doom or alcemist

awesome thread, actualy good content for the community to learn. I myself did not play back then. Thus I had no idea of this hero. was glad to learn this. Thanks.

What made his luck-based skills so imbalanced?

I don't know why peoples whined about him, like pretty much everything in dota is luck based except some spell and stats,so,i don't see the problem with the gambler, whining about him is just super hypocrite..

Btw,i want dark terminator before the gambler,we need something for counter rat dota like tinker.

If he has 9k gold, he either deals 9k damage, or loses it all, I think it's fair.... :^)

Come again?

Crits, dodge, miss, backtrack and Ogre (as well as a few other things) are luck based.

Most things are not luck based at all.

There's things that can be random that make the game more interesting or fun, and random things that can be just frustrating. Obviously what's fun and what's not is going to depend somewhat on the individual players, but Gambler was (IMO) the kind of hero who would regularly swing an entire fight based soley on the RNG, without skill coming in to it at all. Essentially, that's TOO MUCH randomness for a game with such a high skill-cap.

Gambler was really overpowered in his short time in the game and all of his mechanics revolved around betting actual player gold.

It would be interesting to see the character come back, but he'd probably be fully reworked from the one that existed back in Dota 1.

That being said, I wouldn't expect him anytime soon. It was Icefrog that took him out. Fun fact: Icefrog also took Techies out of the game. People demanded Techies back. Keep that in mind, Techies was taken out of the game and the comunity demanded his trolling to come back. We're wonderful.

They have an impact on games, yes - that doesn't mean that DotA is entirely luck based.
