And while it's true things might reach some sort of stalemate when everyone is level 25 and six-slotted, if it ever became common enough to be a real problem I think there are better possible solutions.

The thing about item-slot management is that early-game items are highly gold-efficient in terms of stats-per-gold-cost. However they are highly INEFFICIENT in terms of stats-per-slot cost. When you start transitioning to more expensive items, it costs more gold to get the same amount of Str/Agi/Int or whatever else, but you can squeeze more of that into your limited 6-slots. Letting Ironwood branches stack would probably mean that buying as many of them as you can in the early game would give you a huge advantage, even if you ended up having to resell them to progress later on.
