Dota 2
Dota 2 at 144hz and 1080p
I just placed an order for BenQ XL2411Z 24-inch 144Hz and am planning to buy the FX 4300 processor + GTX 760 GPU. I am planning to run DOTA2 on 1080p and ultra settings. Would this be sufficient ? Or would I need a stronger processor as I have heard that source engine games are CPU intensive ?

Dota 2 is not a very demanding game at all, and that setup should work great. However, if you do ever plan to play more demanding games then you might need to rethink that CPU, mainly because it will bottleneck your GPU to a certain extent.

In my opinion, you are better off saving $ by getting an AMD GPU, and using that extra $ to get a better Intel CPU.

Thanks for the response.
I heard AMD processors are good for gaming and hence went for the FX4300 processor since it was also within my price range.
And what processor GPU pair would you suggest for DOTA 2 playing at 1080p 144Hz ?

Dude you actual configuration ios more than enough for 1080p at 144hz, you do not need a new cpu or gpu.

Im running this at 1080p as well with a phenom IIx4 and a 7870 ghz.
Is a waste of money look for a cpu change IMHO uinless the money is burning your finger and you wanna spend it

your first and only problem is you are building a pc around Dota 2.
It is more than sufficient. If dota is the only game you are planning on playing then go with a 650 or even a 560 ti. Even that might be more than enough

Theres nothing wrong with AMD CPU's, but the one you chose is on the lower end of the scale. You will mainly notice this through frame drops in more demanding games though, and not really as much in Dota. So, if all you are planning to play is Dota, then you will be fine. But, for the sake of keeping your PC relevant for longer (which is what I'd recommend), you would be better off going for a slightly stronger processor.

Buying a 144hz monitor means you need to get higher frame rates in order to get the full benefit of having a 144hz refresh rate, and the FX4300 is not capable of this in most cases (not even Dota)

I would suggest an i5 2500, and if you can afford more then go for a newer model like the i5 4670. Pair that with an AMD r9 270x or 280x if you can afford it. That will make your system slightly more expensive, but it would be 100% worth it imo.

Are you getting 100+ fps since I will be using a 144 Hz monitor ?

You can add a bit more and get R9 280, a much better card. But to answer your question, yes your configuration can run Dota 2. And as it's been said in the above post, don't build your computer around one game. Think about long term.

Thanks again for response.
Can you suggest a cheaper option for the 144Hz Dota2 since the i5 you suggested is well beyond my budget ?
I plan on playing other games as well but an FPS of 30+ will work on them.
But my priority is playing DOTA 2 at 100+ fps.

If you cannot afford much more than the FX 4300, then spend 10$ more and get the FX 6300. Its not a hell of a lot better, but its better than the 4300.

I cannot say if this will achieve 100+ fps though, but I will link you to a page that might give you more info.

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/dota-2-performance-benchmark,3481-8.html

Keep in mind that those benchmarks are done at 1680x1050, and 1920x1080 will be more demanding.
