My guide to using Hand of Midas properly
So a lot of people seem unsure of how to effectively use this item. I though I'd share a tip. You're welcome.

Basically Midas gives you a static value of gold, and a percentage of experience. More accurately it gives 190 gold and 250% experience, no matter what creep you use it on.

So in a nut shell, if you want to gain experience rapidly, you should use it on high experience yielding creeps, such as the largest units in large/medium camp neutrals.
However, if you want to gain gold fast, then you should use it on the smallest creeps which give least gold, or even lane creeps.

Method one is usually most effective at the start of the game, while method two is best used after reaching a high level.

Midas away people!

some maths:

if we count, that average game session in Dota lasts for around 50 mins o_O
10 mins to farm midas

The rest u play with it and use on cooldown:
that's 40x60= 2400 seconds
The cooldown for HoM is 100 seconds
Which means you can use HoM a maximum of 2400/100= 24 times
And you get 190 extra gold for using it.
That means, you get 4560
However, HoM costs 1900 gold, so the extra gold you're actually earning is 4560-1900= 2660 for the entire game.

Worth..?

You can then sell the midas for 950 gold, so add 950 to your total.
Yes, worth, and not just for the gold, it's the experience gain that's useful also.
Obviously you don't get it every game or on every hero, you have to actually think before you buy it, but yes, it's worth it.

Yeah a lot of people forget to add the sell value to the maths. If you do it right, you can sell it by 40 mins or so, because you should be out of item slots by then!

I once carried a 57 min game with Midas jungle Axe vs SF and Morph. MIdas wins games.

You don't get "190 extra gold", you get 190 gold fullstop. So if you use it on a creep that would give you 40 gold, you get 190 not 230.

Math.
Cost is 1900 gold. Sell for 950.
you get 190 every time you use it.
950 / 190 = 5
So it starts making money after 6 uses.
6 x 100 = 600 sec = 10 minutes.

Just keep in mind that with a 10 minute Midas you will be gold poor for the first 20 minutes of the game. The game might be lost by then. Especially if you are running around the jungle and your team is basically playing a 4 vs 5 game.

midas is good only if you know its gonna be a long game....if the enemy smells it they will overrush you early-midgame.

ok so here gos
it costs 2050 not 1900 and sells for 1025 (patch 6.80)
it gives you 190 gold flat. you could say that your only makeing 80-170 gold with each use since the creep you killed would have given you gold any way. however the creep you killed died instantaly so you did not need to spend time killing it, unless you are farming with an AoE in which case killing one extra creep would take you no time. there for it helps heroes who can only kill one creep at a time more then heroes who can kill many at once. if you can farm with an AoE you should buy a HoD insted, dominate a creep with it and use that creep to stack your jungle every min, since it willl take you little or no extra time to farm a stacked camp, and midas will be giving you only 80-170 extra gold rather then the full 190.
its also worth noteing that it gives you 30 attack speed thats worth something. if you value 30 AS at 500 gold then it only costs 1550 gold, but this is only relivent on a hero who gains something from haveing attack speed.

Or if you really want to ruin Beastmaster's day, grab it on Doom.
