Needs explanation on item rarity
By that I mean the marketplace/armory items. You see things with a cool skin for 10 cents, but then the same item can cost 5 bucks because it's purple or something.
Does anybody really care about the rarity? If it's purple does it glow ingame or something? Cause in my opinion, it seems kind of stupid to waste 5 bucks on something you could just get for 10 cents.

Thank you for the completely useless response.

I won't, that's not the point, I'm wondering why other people would.

growing community and items that cant be droped anymore going up.
im currently aiming for a ti2 courier worth 350$+

Google for example "New Bloom Gem" or "New Bloom unusual courier" the effect is pretty lame, thats why its worth nothing.
If there are Items which look good and cant be obtained anymore the price goes up.

Items are not the same, you just don't see the difference.
White are common, lightblue are uncommon, darkblue are rare, purple are mythical, pink are legendary.
Rarity goes in that order.
Rarity doesn't mean they look better in all cases, because it's mostly personal preference, but most of the time the better rarity the more expensive item is, well, because it's rarer.

But... if all it is is a skin, then they are the same. The exact same, rather, only difference is the name.

If I give you a rock and tell you it's gold, it's still, literally, a rock.

You are confusing items and skins. Items change the model of your character, skins only change, well, skin. Skin is like a paper put on model. Model is how character looks(horns, big nose, very tall, etc.)
They are not the same.
Examples on same hero:

Sometimes its the extra Animation or that you can rarely see one while playing.
Like theres a Legendary Kotl Staff worth 17$ in an old chest.

Some users buy Items like Heroic cause its with their fav Player.
I prefer good looking or things i rarely see.

I'm a game dev, that's not what I meant. What I meant was this

Same item, but because the other one has an orange name it is 5x the price. That's what I'm confused about. Personally if I saw somebody who bought one of those instead of just the cheapest one I'd think them of an idiot instead of some leet Dota 2 player.

Should have put that link from the start :)
Will go in order:
1. Normal common item
2. Item earned during this year's New Bloom event
3. Cursed (not sure what's the deal with that, google)
4. Item earned during this year's Wraith Night event
5. Heroic (google)
6. Inscribed ( I think these have special gem inside)

So yea, there are "genuine" items that are original, not won during events (in which you get items much easier).
Mostly only people who care about this are collectors. But if someone were to give me either item from event, or genuine one, I would of course take genuine one as it's worth more :)
But if I was buying, I would get the cheapest one.

Thanks for the help, appreciated.
Ahh, I see what the OP is on about now.
"orange" items are Inscribed quality that have a counter that keeps track of something, such as the kills you've made, number of wards placed, etc. It's basically an extra vanity thing for people who want to know what they've achieved with their favourite character since they got the item.

Colors are just the Drop Rate of the items. According to this, they can be find easily and you can get them for nothing here:

{LINK REMOVED}

The cool side is that, most of the time "That awesome Item you like" is a common item. (ie, morphling best set is made of 4 commons, u can get the set for 1 Rare in this website).

So if you are into buying stuff, I would suggest you to buy your sets at valve, and sell parts you dont like at {LINK REMOVED} to get items you want.

gl!

i think people want rarer items because it makes you feel good, say you have a dragonclaw hook just knowing someone somewhere will buy that hook and you will become a rich man.
