Is it hard for new players to learn?
So I'm getting back into PC gaming after a 3 year hiatus and DOTA 2 is one of the games I've been wanting to play for a while. I know practically nothing about the games mechanics, and so I'm just wondering if its hard for newbies like me to get into it without being steam rolled time after time and not being able to learn the do's and don'ts. I have no doubt that its a hard game to master, but is it at least newbie friendly?

Definitely not "noob-friendly", no. Most people will most likely be angry with you if you do something incorrect, so prepare for a lot of rage.

I would say it's a hard game to learn for a completely new player. Some people may find it simple, some people may think it's the hardest game in the world.

Honestly, I don't think the game is that hard as some people say, but you will need to learn a bunch of things that are not so obvious at first glance.

You will probably have some trouble and, of course, you won't learn everything with just a few matches, but, in my option, learning the game is very satisfying and comes naturaly as you play more games and try new heroes and combinations. You can still find enjoyment even when losing and learn from your mistakes and what the other team did better.

Unfortunately, dotes has a lot and I mean a lot of uneducated people. It's a game that some idiots, because it's the only thing they seem to play in their miserable lives (actually, it seems to be the only thing they do in their lives), will rage for anything. My advise is to mute them, report them, find them and kill them because we don't need more idiots in this world.

Just try to not get caught while doing this haha.

what i did was that i was calculating everything around me.. that in dota 1 there is a spell for a hero that burns mana and i was sure it deals bonus damage but it wasnt written.. i told some of my friends but they said no.. in dota 2 its clear. it does bonus damage so i was right .,
you just have to pay attention and calculate damage, armor, magic and all kinds of things :)

its harder than LoL, but getting to learn the mechanics with bots would make the transition easier when you go onlilne (coming from another noob, as i spent the first 60 hours playing with bots),
also, if you have friends, it'll make the learning process much better when playing against bots...

How do you think the players with 1000+ hours learned? Matches, Pratice with bots, teachers, youtube.

Dota takes about a year to become competent at. If you are completely new play against bots and do the limited heroes mode once you get a handle on how to play the game.

There are really 2 different sets of skills required to play dota 2 well. The first is rather obvious; knowing how to use a certain hero. The second is map awareness. Both sets of skills come with experience. Play a hero enough times and you'll get the hang of him/her. Play the game enough times and you'll develop a sense for where your enemies are at all times and what areas of the map are safe for you to be in.

If you are new I suggest playing the game casually and muting anybody who flames you too hard. Sometimes more experienced players will give you tips on how to improve, other times they will just tell you that you are bad and call you some pretty harsh insults. If someone is flaming you and you tell them that you are new, they might give you some tips. Some players are just toxic and you are better off not letting their negativity ruin your mood. You can avoid this altogether by playing with friends, though your more experienced friends may not want you in their matches.

Losing a game because a player can't carry his or her own weight is very frustrating.

^ I wouldn't say that it takes a year to be competent ^

It's more of an experience thing imo. Yes, your first. . . many games will be hard, and you may or may not run into people who will rage at you, but odds are they're not the GREATEST at the game either.

If I were you I would read one of those basic tutorials first, to get the lingo and basics down. Chicken = courier, counter invis heroes using dust or sentry wards, PLEASE don't tank towers, don't auto-attack (right-click) the creeps all day every day (usually just focus on last hits and denies), etc. I do not recommend the built in tutorials within the game. Imo the only substantial thing you get from it is some last hitting practice.

What's most struggling, I find, is the fact that you have to learn ALL if not most of the heroes abilities to play well, as well as the items in the shop. For me personally the shop took more time for me to learn than the heroes, haha. Knowledge will come with experience, so just push through it and you'll be having fun in no time!

Btw, as with all games trolls and flamers will be everywhere, even in higher ranked games. Don't let it discourage you though, there are nice people too!

Also, I find that if you are just starting out playing in a party with your friends is counter productive. If you play in a party with one of your friends you will be put into a game with players of his level. . . And well, you don't want that happening, no matter how nice your friend is, or how many friends are in your party. Dying isn't fun, haha

Read guides, develop map awareness and learn how to last hit.Do not start with playing supports ,it will just make you noob for a longer time. Also, read hero abilities and item uses.Have fun.P.S :I'm not noob-friendly

Its not hard to learn, specially with the training stages and the bot coop with human or bot only options, don't jump straight in pvp tho, you won't get any help, people will be asses to you, you will probably learn after a while, itll be a lot more tiring to learn while everyone is hating on you for being new tho.

If you add me now,I can let you on some tips since I'm less busy today.

Honestly, the basics shouldn't be that hard to learn, though they WILL take you a long time to master. The biggest problem IMO is that the two pieces of the community, veteran and amateur, don't really communicate well.

Some people just aren't receptive to criticism, of any kind, in any form. Unfortunately, these are also the people most likely to skip as much of the tutorial as they can and just jump into real games, thinking that they will figure it out as they go.
There are also some people that just aren't any good at conveying information; teaching is something of an art- that's why you need to go to school to learn how to do it.

And this relative minority tends to screw up the atmosphere for a lot of other people.

The players who can and would advise and help out get understandably pissed off when someone refuses to listen to them and responds to any comment other than "Wow you're awesome!" with the mute button. And the players who like try to implement actual helpful instructions stop listening when every failure is greeted with swearing and insults, and every action they take that isn't not only perfectly executed but in also accordance with what the rest of the team wanted is treated as a mistake.

If everyone was just a little more understanding, less aggressive, and we had a better way to ban the real ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, I think people would get past the truly noobish phase quicker, and the whole environment of the game would improve.
