Should I hold onto magic wand late game?
Hello everyone, as a player who is relatively new to DOTA, I would like to ask a question about the item "Magic Wand." Apparently, it is vital to several core hero builds, but by the late game, should I replace it with say, "Bottle", or even swap it out for a non-healing item like "Mithril Hammer?" I primarily play Legion Commander, if that information helps. Thank you!

Wand is only good for some sustain on lane and thats it. I dont recommend to keep it for too long.

You should only swap it out when you've got to replace it with another item, which is around the time 225(max) HP and mana stop being useful (i.e., mid game). You absolutely should NOT be replacing it with a bottle, especially on a hero like LC. Bottle is an early game regen item. Unless you're specifically aiming for invis and DD runes, there's absolutely no place for a bottle at mid game.

As a side note, Wand's really not as important as most guides like to make out. Most of the time it's Purge who thinks it's some kind of god-tier item on every single hero. You only really need it if your opponents have spammable spells or if you're playing a hero who's always in the middle of a fight and who needs that boost of HP and mana to get another spell off.

Thanks for the advice. Should I use magic stick instead of wand, and spend that money on something else?

It's really up to you.
I usually only go with Stick if someone's spamming spells in lane (since you can buy it from the side shop). I then upgrade to Wand if i started with a lot of branches and the courier isn't especially busy.
So if you started with 2-3 Iron Branches and have a Stick, it's usually worth just grabbing the cheap upgrade recipe so you can keep the bonus of having +3 to all stats and have an emergency heal at the same time.
If you're trying to rush an item, aren't seeing a lot of use from your Stick, or simply don't think you'll need it that much, don't force yourself to upgrade it.

it depends a lot on the opponent you are facing... like pudge or skeleton king, in that case you dont need wand at all as they wont be using their spells much.
But if you are facing someone who spams spells a lot like bristleback you should get it and probably even upgrade if you picked up some branches at start for bonus hp/damage.
