-Which one do you preffer, Quake or TF2?- I said
My friend was with WTF face and I was laughing hard.
Long story short, stop using Riot's words, instead, use common sense and call the genre "DotAlike games", "AoSlike games" or "ARTS" and it's variations.
I feel MOBA better describes it, but again personal preference.
The definitions have a more complicated meaning than just the name- we use the acronyms because it's short-hand so we don't have to spend a paragraph's worth of description every time we want to discuss something.
DotA was the originator, yes, but referring to other games as the "dota genre" is sort of like calling Halo or Medal of Honor "CoD games". It doesn't really make sense, I think, to name an entire genre after a game that already has a specific name, especially when "Defense of the Ancients" isn't really much more descriptive.
Also, Real Time Strategy games have some very specific connotations, mostly in that they fall in the "single player controlling armies" category. You can disagree is that's a good thing or not, but it's what, historically, they have referred to.
Games like DotA or League are different enough that I think they should have their own category. If you don't want them to be "Multiplayer Online Battle Arenas" then what do you suggest? When I say "MOBA" people who play videogames know what I'm talking about, and if they don't I not sure what other easy term I could use.
ARTS ? Action RTS ? So what, the rest of the RTS have no action in them ? So, now starcraft is an ARTS too ?
So what that MOBA can describe a bunch of things? I don't see anyone calling quake or tf2 a MOBA game. Might as well complain about the term RPG being so loosely used these days.
Whatever people are idiots
Your complaint sounds a lot like saying- I don't like McDonald's so I'm going to refer to these delicious food-items as "ground meat sandwiches" with a side-order of "starchy-squares".
Starcraft is an RTS. Red Alert was an RTS. DotA, League, and others are nothing like those games. Stop being so stuck up.
Boohoo. The gaming community uses a genre name you don't agree with.
