Solutions:
1: Devote around 600 hours of your life to learn the most basic things about dota and to get used to graphics and hud
2: Go back to LoL
I dont think the map is the problem, the 2 games are very different, and Dota 2 is currently the most unique MOBA out there due to the fact most games copy LoL rather than dota, and because Dota's dificulty tends to scare away newcomers. Instead of looking at this from a LoL perspective look at it from a Dota perspective. In the game where the lane is doesnt change anything, no offense but whether or not you can see the road is pretty trivial. Not to mention that the large map is another important part of the game, 5v5 teamfights can break out in a second, and when that isnt happening the heroes are spread around the map, making things very unpredictable. Im sorry but those changes are never going to happen, Dota is its own game, not LoL, so they try to distinguish themselves from it rather than make the game more like it.
Options, all that's needed is a few options.
He can't tell what a tree is
He can't tell where there is space to walk
Trees are those tall things on the side of the path.
You can walk anywhere there is not a tree or cliff.
