Dota 2

New to Dota 2, player from Heroes of the Storm, what should I expect and what heroes/builds?
I know there's gold and a few different systems compared to HotS (as far as I know people told me HotS is trimmed on fat with less kill systems/items/gold on last hits/single xp stuff, and shorter games as well).

I play a large variety of characters in HotS that doesn't include the very hardest (The Lost Vikings, as far as I know they are like the Meepos which TLV split into 3 to soak as much xp as possible, and Abathur which also soaks a lot of xp while sitting at base supporting teams by "evolving" them. I do the best in peeling machines with tons of cc and hp or bruiser type characters that can do tons of damage. However, I can play healer just fine or push lanes or jungle or be an assassin/carry/ganker. I don't know how support are supports in this game, which HotS there are hybrid supports and full healbots (hybrids can do part time damage part time heals, while healbots are all heals and utility). Some of my best characters in HotS include Tyrael, ETC, Muradin, Azmodan, Arthas, and Illidan (sometimes I'm good at Stitches too, while other characters I'm only decent). I know Stitches is like Pudge or the hook guy, and Illidan is like Anti-mage or a sustained autoattack damage dealer guy.

I've looked at some Dota heroes as well, which I am liking the characters of Anti-mage, Pudge, Clockwerk, etc, but what are some characters given my playstyle in HotS, and are there tier lists out there with reasoning/builds?

as for the game tho u should learn from scratch and not compare anything from hots to dota

Thanks for the insight @no more heroes, really helpful to me. Seems like tanks and healers can do a bunch of damage compared to HotS with heroes like Stitches barely doing damage other than his hook dependant on his teammates to finish whoever he hooked. ETC especially hits like a potato but I still love his kit with the amount of control he brings. I think Phantom Assassin seems similar to Zeratul but that's stretching it a bit, Illidan and Zeratul are pretty similar (not really but still in that same class perspective they are). And yeah his W is Sweeping Strike with Immolation. Once again thanks for the info. :)
Ur welcome, just my opinion tho haha, Zeratul yeah now that you mention it, but Zeratul is also similar to Riki, except Riki have zero AoE damage.

One thing that is clearly better in Dota than in HoTS, is how diconnecting from a game is handled, bye bye to "server catching up", that really takes the cake as the single dumbest thing I have ever seen in any game, and if you do get dropped or the server craps out and you can no longer reconnect, YOU are the one punished in HoTS as the leaver, the whole team gets punished for that in HoTS.

So far the only one I really cannot play is Clockwerk (I don't get his playstyle, he zombie walls himself and then dies 9/10 times).
For clockwerk, you're supposed to get close to an enemy hero and use the cogs so that you two are trapped essentially. There are many other things you can do with it(such as using it to escape) but they're more advanced than you should bother with.

I still don't get this style though, why would you want to trap yourself when you can trap them in it alone (that's what the zombie wall is on Nazeebo, you trap the enemies unless you are bad and you trap yourself/allies for no reason). But Clockwerk traps himself and that's sorta anti-synergic.

@No more heroes
Yeah I looked at Riki's kit, full of stealth.

Yeah I like the system here compared to HotS reconnect which just practically leaves an ai in the game for the rest of the game. Thanks again for the info.

Few questions for everyone:
1. How do I send items to other people? We captured boss/Roshan and I was a support and grabbed the thingy by accident that revives you on death. It saved our main main carry and I ulted as Omniknight, turning the fight around instantly, but it still probably would've been more helpful on someone else.
2. How do I ping?
3. If people disconnect, wouldn't there be a bot that comes in to play for them? I noticed that one game was flat out 2v5 the entire game, but we almost won still (had more kills than them as myself Wraith King and a Bounty Hunter) but always outnumbered so couldn't push.
4. Besides the places with the eye on the ground, where else should I place observor wands?

Thanks for comments/answers everyone, the community is pretty helpful. :)

It synergizes with his Battery Assault. By trapping an enemy with him and keeping everyone else out, he forces them to stand there while they take damage and get mini-stunned.

Most initiators have spells that group people up and/or keep them grouped up. Clockwerk's initiation however can be ruined by people attacking the cogs so he'll want to stay in there for some time to make the enemies focus him rather than the cogs to keep them grouped up for his team. The difference is while most initiations last about 4 seconds Clockwerk's cogs last up to 8 allowing him to keep enemies close together for much longer. However 2 items that help with clock's initiation are blademail and force staff. Blademail will return any damage done to clockwerk allowing him to take people's health down better himself and may also make some enemies regret focusing him allowing him to last in cogs, force staff on the other hand can be used to push clockwerk out of the cogs leaving the enemies inside incase he comes to close to dying.

1. Only some items are shareable and the aegis that you picked up is not one. So be more careful when taking Roshan
2. Alt-clicking anywhere on your screen or the minimap. You can also alt-click practically anything to alert allies like enemy's faces at the top of the screen to call missing, your exp to call out your level, your items and spells to show if they are off cooldown or if you need mana.
3. Bots are only added in some modes like limited heroes and ability draft and it's probably better they aren't added in every mode because the AI will likely feed. However all the gold from them is split amongst remaining players and you can sell their items for yourself if you want but it will make them less effective if you want to control them yourself.
4. Wards are best placed on higher grounds which includes stairs however some other great places to put them include in the enemy base where there are no towers to reveal them, in the enemy jungle where there are large gaps between camps, and even in the secret shops to check for enemy couriers.
Man, you are still thinking too much about what you do on HoTS and trying to bring that knowledge here. Don't do that. It will do more harm than help. Like you getting confused about why Clock trapping someone with him inside is a good thing and not a bad one.

As for sharing items, you can only share a few. You can however use many consumables on your allies like Clarity Potions, Cheese, Healing Salve, Mango... From the top of my head, you can share Mangoes, Tangoes, Bottle (you can use the bottle charges on your allies if you want btw), TPs, Gem... hmm if there's more I can't remember.

The Aegis, the item that you took by accident, is better left for the main carry or someone that can't afford to stay dead in the next battle. When the carry is 6 slotted though, someone else might pick.

The wards locations usually comes with your map awereness. You might want to ward the enemy jungle if you want to kill someone farming there, maybe high ground between towers if you are pushing towers but don't want to get caught by surprise... sometimes you might want to block neutral camps...

this image here shows some good locations to put, but you need to use your good sense to know when to put them: http://i.imgur.com/cDzfo7f.jpg

If clockwerk was outside of the cogs, he wouldn't be able to attack whoever he trapped.
Essentially, early on in the game, if you get trapped into cogs by a clockwerk, you're dead. Battery assault's damage is quite high.

Hook ,cog the cute hero looking like bear. It will roar and scratch you but don't run.
Will have to try via an ai game or two, seems like a really quick way to die though. That being said Nazeebo has a completely different role of sustained range damage so can't compare Clockwerk to him. It's making you open to be killed really quickly as well as whoever you trapped.

Thanks for answers on the questions I asked though, now I can ping and obs wands come a little easier (the places with the eyes and around the beach area of the river.)

how can you be veterean of a game wich has less than a year ?
and also, why are you moving to dota ? if you tell us what are you looking for may we can tell you how to find it, it is just that i usually say people coming from lol, never saw someone coming from host, other than this, i think that arts/moba/dota-like/how-you-want-to-call-this-genere are becoming an old type of game, and it isn't worth to learn to play them, i dont even remember why and how i learned to play this game, i wouldn't do it again, but i'm happy i did so
I'm not moving to dota, I just picked it up since a friend told me to play it. I still play heroes regularly if not more than any other game at this point.

Veteran may not be the best word but already have like 1.5k games and a week worth of time on that game, so been playing there a while.
Tidehunter is so much fun, so much initiate power with rewind + double ravage.

Omniknight, Juggernaut, Sven, and Wraith King are also pretty fun.

Pretty much. It also has the added effect of pushing away enemies that come close though.

Glad to see that you're enjoying the game^^
That said, if you plan on keeping on using these heroes, I can say that it'll do quite well as you've got heroes in quite a couple farm positions/roles. You might want to learn a ranged hero or two though.

Bots are generally a pretty good way to start, whether you're new, or just trying out something new.
Yeah I'm not sure which ranged heroes I should go for. Most of them seem pretty generic/aa based and I don't know what spellcasters exist (only lima and zues I think and they seem pretty meh). I see most ranged heroes in limited do really poorly but most melee heroes (bounty hunter, sand king, tidehunter, sven, juggernaut, etc) take the win/carry. I'll take a closer look at the ranged heroes another time.
