Put the map on the Map directory and run the game.
You can't play on Battle.net without a legit cd-key.
I warn you... It's got a larger learning curve than even Dota 2. For example, the shop is not organized in the same way as the shop is in Dota 2... Dota players rejoiced when Dota 2 was first released at how much better the shop was, so that's something too. If you've not got the knowledge of item requirements down yet, you should probably start studying up, and then hope to remember which shopkeeper has them.
What's better about it is the fact that servers are run by players, and players CAN be banned from servers/communities quickly, and effectively. There's upsides to the system used in Dota 2 (A lot actually), but the effectiveness at eliminating undesirables by community run servers is unrivaled by any Publisher-run server system thus far.
I must also note that the controls are completely different... There's no QWER ability keys on WC3 Dota. Some heroes abilities will be things like WXCD, while another heroes might be EFCT... It's the way abilities worked in Warcraft III, the binds for them referred to a character in their name, rather than a specific "order" in which they appear.
Lastly, if you're used to playing polished, shiny new games with fluid animations etc. you might not like Dota 1... I played WC3 way back, and was used to the horrid animations etc, I imagine if you're not accustomed to them, it may take some getting used to, and you may be persuaded to not make that commitment.
But wc3 has beautiful animations ;w;
I was always under the impression that the kind of "default" setting was that it picked a character from their name that was formerly unbound and assigned a temporary bind to that ability. Now that I know this though, it is a mystery why it wasn't just bound to the same keys for all heroes lol.
I'm not sure about that lol. The last time I played Dota 1 about 3 weeks ago, the attack animation would be completely finished before the damage even registered. It may be attributed to lag, but there's no way to know for sure that I'm aware.
You can download it from Blizzard, who owns the game. (After you buy it ofc)
