How can I learn hero counters?
I know this game is basically an overly complicated game of rock paper scissors, but I honestly can't figure out what hero counters what.

Yesterday, I got into a match and someone told me to play dragonknight (in limited heroes btw), because our opponents chose razor, drow ranger, and sniper. I never had much luck with dragonknight in the past (well, except in the original dota), but I chose him anyway. And I did actually do well. But I don't understand why. And the day before I played mid lane viper against a lich, who owned me like he was in god mode. Seriously, he didn't care if I hit him or ulted him or anything, even at level one he could own me like I was weaker than a creep. And I don't understand how he did that. I tried to play lich myself mid, and it simply didn't work. And I've never heard anything about lich being played mid. How it worked for him I don't know.

And I don't understand why people can do things that don't work for me. Everyone's always tankier than me and deals more damage than me and everything, and yes I am buying items, and even copying builds, but that doesn't help. I can't get wraith king for instance to deal decent damage, and he's squishier than viper when I play him!

The wiki only gives justification for the recommended items which no one seems to like. But I have no choice but to go with it because there's just too many items, all with teeny tiny icons, and you can only see them when you play a game!

How am I supposed to learn this???

Just learn about mistakes. Why you lose a lane against lich? He probaly spammed you down with frost blasts, what can you do against people that spam magic > buy a magic stick and not wraith band. It shouldn't be too hard to win last hits against a lich and get a bottle which makes you just regain all your health every 2 minutes.

The first step is to learn the heroes. Once you know each hero's strengths and weaknesses, then you can pick a hero to counter them. Dota is so complicated that most heroes counter most others in one way or another. Many times a two will counter eachother

Learn the heroes weaknesses and stregths, learn spells and items. I think that is the basics.
Never take dk mid vs ranged carrys you will fall behind and it will be tolate

I've been playing DK in the safe lane. As for that game, I laned with a witchdoctor against a spririt of vengeance (the drow ranger I mentioned left at the start of the game), so our lane was obviously pretty one-sided. She got no farm, and we killed her at least twice.

As for his advantages, all I've managed to figure out is he's really good at killing towers in dragon form. And I'm guessing he's also good against physical damage dealers since he gets armor from his passive and can reduce attack damage with his q. He's also fairly tankish and has a good early-game stun. But as for disadvantages? I don't know other than the fact that he's melee. And he doesn't seem to have that great of damage, but that's a recurring problem I'm having with all the heroes. That game I built BKB on him, I think as my second item. First item was a bracer or something like that, and of course treads (strength), after that I can't remember. though I was thinking of going for more items with high strength bonuses to improve both my tankiness and my damage simultaneously.
of course learn the heroes . try to actually play at least every hero few times. Look for guides on you tube. they will tell you all you need to know . but just playing the game trail and error will get yuo there.

Few major things i will tell you .

If you see PL 100% you need to have sven or ES on your team to make life ez.
For example if you see slark you might want to have BS .
For example you have magic hereos you probably want to pick AM
Lets say you have AM you want to pick SB .
IMO those are the major counters.

Since you only have 31 hours i wouldnt worry about this . Learn to last hit well , learn to use the map , learn to call missing and using wards , smoke ,deward. you much to learn lolo. i still know nothing and i am close to 1700 hours loll .

I don't know any of those abbreviations. Everything you just typed is gibberish to me. No offense.

PL = Phantom Lancer, ES = Ember Spirit, BS = BloodSeeker, AM = Antimage, SB = Spirit Breaker

Also, if you are not familiar with the abbreviations, you definitely aren't ready to learn all the counter picks. I am at 200 hours and I am finally good with last hits and general playing/warding. I am now learning all the counters and roles.
add, i explain

You need more experience in the game. Also, the advice your friends gave isn't very good.

Dragon Knight "counters" sniper and drow because he is hard to kill and can walk / blink / shadowblade next to them and kill them early game. But late game, if you allow sniper or drow to become really farmed, your spell + attack combo can no longer kill them, but their damage + pseudo-disables will kill you from beyond your attack range.
A far stronger counter to sniper and drow would be spectre (because you can appear next to them with your ult and kill them with radiance + desolate) or spirit breaker (because you can charge them, chain stun them, and kill).

As for viper losing lane to lich, lich reduces your attack speed (so you can't kill him fast enough) and deals magical damage. To counter this on viper, build a wand (to heal based off of the number of times Lich uses spells) and maximize your third skill (magic resistance) first. Remeber that Lich's ult does more damage the more targets are near you and Lich isn't afraid to sacrifice himself to use it (because it will continue to deal damage after he dies). In this sense, Lich counters viper (because you don't have instant burst damage), but you shouldn't lose lane or die too easily to his ult either.

Vs dps damage dealer, you need hp, armor, evasion, blade mail, ghost scepter, disarm ability
Vs magic damage dealer, you need hp, bkb, linken for bkb piercing spell, blade mail, cloak,
Vs illusion hero, you need hp, mjol/mael, critical cleave
