I'll probably wrap up the event and take a few years off (again) after that to decide if the game is worth it in the future.
I think the most boring part is how Valve somehow managed to keep most of the same overloaded heroes good since the update failed to address any core issues with hero kits.
You are around seven years too late, fren. This chitshow started with 7.00. This hasn't been Dota for a looooong time now
Facets and Innates are unbalanced right now and it's clear some of them were made as placeholders, but they are a welcome addition to the game, for it adds an interesting new layer of depth during both the pick phase and in game.
For sure it is overwhelming at first, and things are going to change. But all you have to remember and picture is the whole "curve" that happened with neutral items: from people being able to equip multiple neutral items and hog them, to the development of neutral item slots and the creation of neutral token. Things get better over time, with feedback and testing. Just saying "No" is easy, because it is easy to enjoy what we already know and what we are used to. But these changes take courage and a lot of effort from the developers.
The game has evolved, and I am glad it did. Just look at the Support perspective: from having to start with no items because you had to pool tango to the mid, buy the courier, upgraded it - one courier for the whole team - and having to play with brown boots the whole game just so an AFK Jungler would kill everyone after spending 45 minutes playing World of Warcraft with neutral creeps while you had zero items to defend yourself because your inventory was filled with town portal scroll, sentry, observer, dust, boot and stick.
The game is always improving, and for sure mistakes are made and things are changed back, but Dota today is in a much better state than it was years ago. Some people lack the perspective to understand what is improvement and what is "their liking".
This game is aeons ahead league of legends in quality of gameplay, and in no way, shape or form it resemble league of legends since one is chess and the other is checkers.
I wasn't there, but I am sure a lot of the complainers of dota sound like the people who played chess before the advent of the Queen: "This is outrageous, to have this piece to move this much. And a female, nonetheless! Queen's Chess is an aberration! It is too fast for me! This generation doesn't know what strategy is, that is why they want such a strong Queen! Damn these feminists trying to ruin Chess with their new standards and morals!"
It's not only okay, but it is great to complain - but try to be constructive, and say things that try to move things forward, instead of just saying "bring the old back".
I personally feels Invoker innate core concept is bad. I made a suggestion for him to interact with Wisdom runes somehow. I also belive both his Facets are bad, splitting Wex into two is a disgrace, and the WR of the hero reflect that. I am unhappy with the state the hero is at, but I understand that things will change with time. One of my favorite additions was the Facet that allows Treant to plant a tree with living seed - it's a huge quality of life change, that doesn't require you to have an enemy around anymore and there is play potential with that little tree. The thing is to try to be objective to the game instead of subjective to your own taste. Some of the Facets are absurd and stronger than others, same goes for innates, but with time and feedback things will settle.
And when they do, some time after, another patch will arrive and change a lot again. And that is one of the great things about Dota.
Scanning through the replies and was about to say this before I came upon your post.
The last patch that really felt like Dota for me was around 6.7. When 7.00 hit I took a good several year long break.
Came back and still playing for fun, but the soul has gone, if they reverted back I wonder if the new gen players could handle just how streamlined it was, the game just flowed.
Don't get me wrong it still had it's issues, but it was the streamlined aspect I loved.
Imagine putting Valve in charge of international chess championships. "This game has lasted with the same ruleset for over a thousand years but a small subset of the community on reddit is demanding changes!" All of a sudden you've get 25 additional pieces each and after every 10 moves you have to dance the prisyadka to get an extra 1-3 moves depending on how well you did it.
Indeed, what's your point?
