'Keys won't work' bug

I was wondering if anyone else had this problem. Very occasionally, when I play Dota, my keys will not work properly. It will take me anywhere from 1-5 key presses for the button to respond. This makes uses abilities and items an absolute pain and quite a gamble to see if I ever do get to use them.

I know it's just Dota 2 because I can type this perfectly well and every other game just works fine. But for whatever reason like once every 20-30 games, my keys will stop working. Restarting the game won't work, I have no idea what it is.

Sometimes I have to mash buttons for them to go off, sometime on the 5th press my blink dagger will trigger, but since I was mashing it I teleport back to base instead of going in the right direction.

Funny thing is my mouse will work fine, so I can move around and right click away, but just my keys become a lottery. Sometimes they work on one press, others it can take up to 5, or 3, or 2, or 4. It's completely random.

Please someone tell me what is wrong.

I have the same issue. After the standard restarting/reinstalling work I was desperate and decided to check whether it is connected to my graphics card or it's drivers. I ran dota using the "weak" card, the integrated one (I use a laptop, which has 2 graphic adapters aboard) , by simply disabling another one, and u know what? IT DID HELP! I was quite amazed, as i didn't think it would work. So the issue is a graphics card. Try reinstalling the driver. Hope that helped. I haven't solved the issue myself yet, too lazy to reinstall the NVidia stuff ^_^ but i hope this helps ;)

UPD: I have fixed it at last. All you need to do is to delete all your primary graphic card drivers completely, including GeForce Experience (if u got one), and reinstall it. The game works perfectly afterwards

Thanks for the response! Did you try rolling back the drivers at all? I'll replicate what you did if nothing else works. Thanks again! (hope it does indeed work)

You can try to roll them back, but i would recommend to do a total clean reinstall if that is possible. Took me 2 tries to fixthis. First time, when only the driver itself was reinstalled, it didnt help. I had to disable the card through windows, delete the driver, reboot, delete GEFORCE Experience and ALL NVIDIA graphic stoftware at once. Then i reinstalled it using the "fresh" copy from their website. Now everything works fine. I think the last driver update caused the trouble. Hope this helps :P

UPDATE: I have fixed the problem!!!

Resetting my drivers did NOT help. What I found out is that it's an issue with the Nvidia drivers. After testing the game on integrated graphics, I noticed the game actually played normally (albeit very slowly). Specifically, it's a Nvidia Shadowplay issue.

Luckily the fix is very simple. You simply have to go to your dota2.exe file, right click it, properties, compatibility, and then click 'run as administrator'. This will actually fix the problem for whatever game it is, it's not just Dota2.

As for why this works, I have no idea. But it's an issue with Nvidia shadowplay that causes the keys to not work. I tried resetting the drivers but that did not actually change anything.

EDIT: And you should also enable Steam to run as administrator in the same way.

Happened to me a few times while using Invoker.
Sometimes the keys are shuffled, like Sun Strike's key becomes D, while Meteor's becomes T. And there are also times that the keys for my invoked skills become the button position relative
D and F.
Re-invoking the skill fixes it, but the problem is that sometimes, the bug happens in a clash.
I'm not gonna complain tho, DotA 1 players like me are glad that the DotA 2 devs even implemented Legacy Keys.

For some reason this did not work for me. I am at the point where I want to delete Dota 2 as I can't play it like this. I have noticed that the problem would go away after some updates but it would return after the next update. If anybody can assist me with this issue, help would be much appreciated!

Don't think this has anything to do with the servers that are lagging.. Gameplay is fine its just my keys not working. I am playing over Wi-Fi, will connect with a Lan cable and see if the problem persists..

TigerKirby215, it's not input lag, as the keys simply do not work sometimes.

Sulphitezz, I wish I was more of an expert so I could help you, I struggled with this issue for several months before I found the fix. Try disabling the Nvidia capture server when you play if you run Nvidia. But in general, I don't think it's a connection issue. Best of luck man!

Hi, I had this problem myself and it was blowing my mind,

Hopefully everyone with this problem will come read this post, it is not a connection/spike/keyboard/system issue.

The issue where bound keys don't work in game, but work everywhere else is 100% an NVIDIA issue. It is either caused by NVIDIA experience/shadowplay or the driver.

Just uninstall the graphics driver and reinstall. works perfectly fine now.
