Download is not really important whats important is the quality of your ISP's routing and your upload.. its a mistake many "internet noobs" make.

So what I would do is make sure you have a decent upload, that your ISP has good routing and that you don't go on far away regions (only tick on the one cluse to you)

Where are you from ?
What region do you play on ?

If you expirience lag you can try to set down ingame gfx settings as well (it might not only be a connection problem)

You need about 50kbps upload to play decently, and about 100 down...and of course a decent ping.
If it's wireless...you might as well give up. Do a speed test online.

I'm sure you beable to play the game i'm just not sure you will experience good ping numbers. If you don't mind downloading the game you can do an in game check on the pings. If the region you live in below 200 ping you might be able to reliably play the game. I just wouldn't try to play the game beyond 200 ping.

Thats not really true tbh or well it depends on what you call decently. Personally I could never play with a ms above 50 (I dislike anything about 15) I have 5ms on the servers I play.

But we can agree that anything around 50 should be "allright"
But you need more than 50kbps upload to have that unless you live very close to the server and have good routing.. I still have 5 ms even if I use all my "100 mb download" download is not really important.

If he had 150 ms he would have what felt like 1.5 sec delay I call that unplayable.. but to each his own

If you play with netgraph on, it'll show you the consumption. I think it's about 50 up, 80 down, maybe less if you lower your rates (which is gonna impact net performance).

About 100ms is the cut-off for me. US West is about 130ms, and for me that's laggy as ♥♥♥♥. In FPS games, i don't mind up to about 180, but DotA you can really notice the difference in simple things like turning.

Also: ms is milliseconds. 150ms is 0.15 seconds. So it's not that bad, it just not that good either.

Not true the delay only starts to kick in if you are over 200 ping. This is true because i play on USEast and West, where my connection is below 40ms on east and 100ms on west. I have had pings upward to 200 on west server experience no delays. It really depends the computer and connection tbh.

The delay is there no matter what.

200ms is a .2 second delay, it is instantly noticeable to anybody.

100ms is too. Any delay in double digits or more can be discerned by the human eye.

I know the "consumption" is low but the faster upload the better ping/ms thats just a fact.
I would never play above 50 tbh I almost feel handicapped if I play with 25.. but its a matter of what you are used too.

But its important for him to get a proper ISP with good routing, because if he has to make 10 jumps to play on the server he might get high ms.

I almost have no delay.. then again I have 5 ms. (I know we have abit, but trust me there is a huge difference on 5 ms 25 ms and 75.)

Just realised it's considerably lower than 80kb/40kb up/down, which is even better for OP. It only needs a little bit of overhead (like 10kb) and it's fine -- maybe a little more for when Steam decides to start ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ around in the background. Speaking of which, should probably play in offline mode, since Steam turns into a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ of bandwidth usage when it knocks you on and off your friendslist..

Considering pinging consists of single kb packets, bandwidth clearly isn't that big a factor. The big thing is usually infrastructure, which again is why the OP should run a speed test online.

As I said.. its nothing to do with the initial consumtions "in the game" but rather that he will have awful routing speed with the poor connection.. it actually means alot.

What should be no problem
Kafka Feb 25, 2016 @ 7:00pm
That should not be a problem. That is the max speed I can get at the moment. Dota 2 plays just fine.
