Dota 2

Default Video Settings
Imho, this should be the default settings for all players. Currently, I may be wrong but I think the defaults are set fairly high or even maxed.

The game sure looked great when I first started playing but has become quite unstable about six months ago. And by unstable, I mean dota shutdown windows at completion of a match (possibly due to excessive requirements ancient's death has on video requirements). [fyi, the same computer for 5 years except for upgrades of power supply, extra 8 mb ram (doubled it to 16mb), and geforce gtx970.]

If your computer cpu, ram, graphics card, etc. can handle higher settings, then go for it. But the average player would benefit not crashing their computer due to default settings causing game-stopping performance issues.

Default Video Settings:

Dota2 Configuration/Settings (click cog wheel from in-game) -- Configuration/Settings opens
-Hotkeys, Audio, Video, Audio, and About tabs across top of window

Click Video tab -- Video Tab opens
-Resolution and Rendering sections across top of window

Resolution
Set aspect ratio to match the aspect ratio of your monitor. Use your operating system control panel or similar to identify your monitor's aspect ratio.

Rendering
Use basic settings (fastest).

I used to have long wait time for loading and even had an abandon due to disconnect from server. Since changing to basic video settings, matches load in about 10 seconds and no more disconnects from matches. Why is this not pinned already?

I already have 16 mb ram and new video card. Within last six months or so, dota2 patches have reduced game performance i.e. the disconnects and long load times mentioned above. Which is why I upgraded ram and video card to try to compensate. Only after reducing video settings to basic did I fix the issue.

You should be able to max dota three times over with a GTX 970(what is your CPU?). I only have a GTX 770m, an I7 4700-MQ, 16 GB of DDR3 ram and i have dota 2 running on a samsung evo SSD(for fast loading times). I can max out the game easily and play demanding custom game modes such as IMBA still getting 60 fps consistently. There must be something else going on here, it should only take about 4-5 seconds to load dota if you have something like a 970(Assuming you have a similarly powerful CPU). Unless you have a really horrible CPU.

He was saying 16 MB is an impossible low amount of ram and you probaly meant 16 GB, have not had 16MB since the eighties.

I did mean 16 GB, thank you for reading in to what I meant to say. My cpu is AMD Phenom II X6 1055T 2.8 GHz, which is just over 5 y.o. and probably horrible as you suggested. The integrated video gave up the ghost a few months back, which is why I now have the gtx 970. The frame-rate is not and has never been the problem. Maybe the computer is just old. Both the video card, ram upgrade (extra 8GB), and power supply are brand new.

You need to get a new cpu and mother board, the rest of your computer is just fine.

If you are one a budget i would suggest getting

http://www.amazon.com/AMD-FD8320FRHKBOX-FX-8320-8-Core-Processor/dp/B009O7YU56/ref=sr_1_3?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1455560437&sr=1-3&keywords=amd+fx

with

http://www.amazon.com/Gigabyte-Chipset-2000MHz-Motherboards-GA-970A-D3P/dp/B00DJ3DWFK/ref=sr_1_5?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1455560507&sr=1-5&keywords=am3%2B+motherboard

It will be a couple hundred but should fix all of your problems.

As I stated above, "Only after reducing video settings to basic did I fix the issue." Since the disconnects and long (sometimes more than a minute) load times were the problems and those problems no longer exist.

Either way you are wasting the power of your GTX 970, you might as well have gotten a GTX 660 and still had similar performance becuase of how bad your processor is.
