Dota 2
Purpose of buying Compendium
Hello,

I usually buy the compendium every year, but this year's items seem very scarce. There's no skins or anything, and no one sees loading screens except if your demoing a hero or something. I don't follow any of the teams and therefore don't care about team stickers and whatnot. I don't use voice lines either. Is there a point to buying the compendium this year?
Thanks

Valve announced like 3 months ago that the compendium wasn't going to have a hundred 10 cent items to bait whales, fewer (if any) game modes that don't add anything to the base game, and a play = progression type of levelling but with payment options.

So what is the point? The point is literally the only reason the compendium ever existed in the first place, supporting the devs, players, castors, event workers in every capacity, and of course the prize pool.

People freaking out about not having their hundred 10 cent items truly boggles my mind. It's a repeat of people freaking out that OW2 doesn't have lootbox gambling, when those same people cried that OW was full of lootbox gambling. The purpose of the compendium is to focus on the event and the game, instead of pumping out game modes that add nothing to the game and cosmetics that only fuel the steam community market.

On top of that, for years now valve has pushed content in different phases for the compendium, it's pretty likely they will role out more content. It costs $9.99 for 6 levels, it's a cheap way to support the game.

I guess I won't be purchasing it then. I already support the game with Dota Plus, and I don't watch competitive Dota either
I got my 6th aegis 5 minutes ago, I'm happy.

Every BP / Compendium got a prize called an aegis. 1 per year. Mark of prestige.

Its just a waste flex. You get a RL shield sent home. (Check my artwork if curious)

Yeah the aegis is a physical small scale version of the Dota 2 trophy awarded to the winner each year. It's usually level 1000 but this year its 300 item boosters (so basically around level 300).

It's basically just a flex, and you can buy them pretty cheap online.

Most sane response about the purpose of the compendium in this entire discussion board.

The point is, as Valve stated, if you are really invested in the pro-scene, TI, and the players or announcers, etc. Personally I'm more about the cosmetics so I'll probably skip it this year, but I bought the Collector's Cache (just a day ago, actually) so I don't feel like I'm missing out.

He was asking for information on what was in it, your bad mannered and rude takes are unneeded. You seem to be spamming this reply in almost every compendium post. Are you a troll? A bot?

The forum dev needs all replacing - After all this is a forum for the players not for the devs
Its no longer for dota players. Its for dota fans

Bringing up OW shows that you are an idiot. People complained about the changes because you could actually get the skins for free by playing and earning coins, in OW2 you basically can't. Also, TI was never just about giving money to the pro players for basically nothing, it was an all encompassing event with activities, items, and new ways to play. People are rightfully angry for this year's complete reversal of compendium trends.

But the issue is that the old compendium mixed the people who were really interested in collecting skins and cosmetics in with the people who were really interested in the pro-gramer scene. And they aren't the same groups of people.

For example, I've shelled out $100+ dollars on the Battlepass every year since 2015, but I don't think I've ever watched a full TI match. Certainly not live, anyhow.
And I'm sure there are people out there who watch TI religiously and have never spent a penny on any BP.

So what Valve is doing is separating those two groups. If you are super-into the pro-scene, this is the compendium for you. If you're really into cosmetics (and probably other events) there will be other content released, such as the 10th anniversary treasure (free) or the collector's cache (paid).
So there's been plenty of opportunity lately for new skins, if you want them. Is the complaint that Valve just isn't giving you ENOUGH free cosmetics? Because honestly that sounds kinda greedy.

A poor take. By combining the cosmetic crowd and the competitive crowd dota 2 had found a system which benefited both. This outcome will work out to be less cosmetics at a higher price for cosmetic people, and less money for the competitive scene. While putting more of that money into valves pocket by not having to share arcana money etc with ti.

So who cares that the comp crowd generally didn't care about cosmetics and vice versa? The proof is in the pudding, player numbers haven't rebounded as they normally do with ti and bp and ti money is lower then ever atm.

In what way is this new formula from valve OBJECTIVELY better for the player base? Less people are playing and less money is going to the comp scene. Oh, they also discontinued dpc and the ability of comp players to make money except for the very best teams. This is a horrendous thing which seems like valve is walking away from supporting dota 2 as much.
