The lanes are called safe- mid- and offlane . (offlane is where the secret shop is)
The most common formation is 2 - 1 -2
then there is 3 - 1 - 1 called trilane
and 2 - 1 - 1 + jungler
The most common strategy is the pos 1 to 5 system. where pos 1 is the main carry. pos 2 mid.
pos 3 offlane. pos 4 offlane support / romer / jungler and pos5 safelane support. And pos 1 has the highest farming priority and pos 5 the lowest.
Compared to League it's slower paced, your abilities matter more, and you should generally be saving them rather than spamming them (especially if you're babysitting a carry). Lane creep control matters so don't auto attack, you'll just push the creeps until it's unsafe to farm. Carries last hit for gold but xp is shared in the area. If you're finding it hard to farm, ask your support to harass/pull the lane back etc (and vice versa if you're playing support, make sure you pay attention to how your carry - and later, the other lanes, are doing).
TP scroll is the most busted item in the game (especially now the map is bigger). TP frequently and often. Always be carrying one (ideally multiple), and be aware of the cooldown timer if you've just used it. TPing to help with fights, or to avoid danger will win you matches. You should play more cautiously when it's on cooldown, and consider walking instead of using it.
Some years ago Dota basically nerfed the jungling role to oblivion because it was becoming a problem, so unlike League, the majority of the heroes are not viable to jungle, and especially not from the beginning. Those that can do it efficiently usually need to get 2-3 levels of abilities in lane, along with specific item builds and strategy. It is best avoided until you have practised a lot and can do it efficiently and safely, because the enemy *will* farm you for kills if you do it poorly and it will ruin games. It is almost always better and safer to stay in lane even if you are finding it hard to last-hit creeps (ask your supports to come and help, work together to get a kill, etc).
Anyway, just complete the new player tutorial and then play coop bot games to learn some heroes until you get the hang of it. Ask for advice in game, let your support know you are new if you're a carry, and immediately mute anyone the second they start raging at you or just say anything negative.
D2 wiki has exhaustive information on everything in the game:

Good luck.
If you don't know how to deny creeps (+towers) you'd probably lose the majority of your laning phase.
I don't think LoL had denying.
What else.
This is probably the same as LoL, but there's LOTS to learn.
You probably wouldn't win PvP modes easily for the first few months, unless you luckily get carried.
When I started this game, I had like 25~30% win-rate with Juggernaut, PvP.
Now I have 50~55% win-rate with Juggernaut, PvP.
There's a CO-OP mode which allows you to fight against BOTS with human allies.
I'd suggest that to start practice.
abandoning matches, going AFK, purposefully trying to lose in any way shape or form
This doesn't make sense.
Have a Michelangelo.
