DotaMemories - A video recording service for Dota2
Hi

I’m Tim, the main developer of DotaMemories[dotamemories.com].

I’m making this post to explain more or less the current state of the project. Basically it’s a service that automatically make a highlight video for each of your Dota2 games.

How does this works ?
You don’t need to install anything on you computer for this to work. Simply login with your Steam account and your YouTube account. Once you’ve done that, we take care of the rest :
  • Download the replay
  • Run through the replay to find interesting actions
  • Record a video of those actions
  • Upload the video on your YouTube account

Wait MY YouTube account ?
Yes the videos are uploaded to your YouTube account. That means that you have full control over your videos. You can edit them, make them public, put ads on them and make money for you views … All what’s possible on the official YouTube Dashboard is possible with the videos uploaded by DotaMemories.

What are you recording exactly ?
We record one video for each of your normal and ranked matches. Custom games are not recorded. Once you subscribed, you don’t need to click a button or anything, all your games are automatically recorded and uploaded on your YouTube account.

How do you find interesting actions ?
We developed a custom replay parser based on the awesome Clarity Replay Parser[github.com]. Our parser focuses on your hero and searches for interesting moments. Our detection algorithm is not perfect but already gives quite good results. We have a lot of ideas for improvements, we just need time to implement them. :)

But I can already watch replays from the game, why would I want a video ?
Well, Dota2 let’s you watch the whole game but not the best moments and it is quite laborious to retrieve a great action. If me and my bro make a 5 men RP into a meteor combo we kind of don’t want this to vanish with replay expiration or the next Dota2 update. :) And we can’t watch that amazing action from our phones or our Tv. If we want to share this with friends, what’s better than a video ?

How much does it costs ?
A subscription to DotaMemories currently costs 9€ per month. You know, we kind of need to eat sometimes … ;) No, seriously, we would love to make this cheaper, but GPU servers are expensive. Just to give you an idea, a g2.2xlarge instance on Amazon EC2 costs 0.65$ per hour[aws.amazon.com]. So just to be able to record one game at a time, we already have at least 468€ per months of server costs. Trust us, we are working hard on this!

If the website takes off, what you guys are planning for the future ?
Make it super easy to share a specific action from the website.
Make an app so that it’s super easy to watch games and share actions from our phones.
Make statistics about games and display them alongside the video with like a cursor and magic stuff that tells where you are on the graphics according to moment you’re watching in the video.

I’m trying my best to make DotaMemories a great tool for people to improve their Dota2 skills, share great moments with friends, etc. It would be so awesome if I could quit my job and work full time on this ! I hope you guys will love the service and tell me how I can improve it ! :)

Tim
