I actually liked the fact a new player has to grind some stuff instead of just trying out any champ they 'think' is made for them. Without spending any money, i have unlocked more than half of champion in League anyways. Every one complains about toxicity, matchmaking and stuff but I found that to be worse in DoTA2. I always told LoL players to go checkout DoTA2 if u think LOL is toxic enough and matchmaking is unfair lol.
I dont know if thats just me but I also found it easier to progress in Lol skill-wise , compared to my initial run in dota2. After spending couple of years in Lol, learning DoTA2 is now a lot more comfortable for me. There is some thing missing in DoTA2's skill progression. You gonna hate me for saying it, im not a 'loyal fan' sorta guy... but it seems DoTA2 actually never moved on since 2013 ? Every major update brings about a storm of negative feedback too. Thats again not the case in LoL. Just recently they brought major changes which were very very positively received by their player base in general. Ofc, not every one can be happy.
LoL devs and the dev process is , quiet frankly, very very open and well-communicated. That seems missing entirely in dota2 since the beginning. LoL actually feels like a community funded open source project hehe.
Would love to see DoTA2 move on to somewhere now... been so long.
As i said, im no longer a graphics/interface sort of guy anymore. From that perspective, I do think LoL is ahead of DoTA at so many levels (especially since DoTA is going through weirdest development phase right now). That also means, any one new to this genre of games, will almost always get turned off by apparently 'eccentric' interface/mechanics of LoL. Once u have spent couple of years in DoTA i am pretty much sure u gonna like LoL a hell lot more if u value the depth of mechanics/tactical gameplay. Thats exactly what happened to me too. Coz I like depth of mechanics and DoTA, Lol, WoTB or WoT PC etc, they all have great depth. Dont let the 'visuals' be a barrier. Honestly, i actually hate the cosmetics, i wish i could turn off all visuals and stuff. Thats the real thing of MOBA based games, they are based on 'competitive-ness' or skill expression etc. I think, visuals/interface is more about grabbing the attention of young folks and keep them entertained and thus 'retained' while being an important source of in-game economy. Totally fine ofc.
Another thing you will 'discover' about DoTA/LoL's community. Many veteran players actually hated and still hate many new interface, visuals and mechanics features introduced. They say, these changes make the game 'noob-friendly' and 'linear' etc haha... You gonna think they want the game to be harder to learn for new players. I think the case is more about having players work hard, understand in more depth before every one reaches higher mmr in no time compared to veterans who had to grind for their ranks for years and years. There has be a lot of frustration in upper skill levels in DoTA and WoTB... LoL suffers much less when compared coz the game doesn't make it easy for u to just land at any rank u want in less time. Not just that, LoL has a subtle but working moderation system in place.
If u never been outside of LoL's world, u can hate a lot about LoL. But compared to current situation of DoTA, my LoL based experience was more satisfactory. And again, its not because of any frustration at the hands of community/devs or any other cheap thing. Lol has well-defined concepts, huge community (+27 million players online as per Oct 2019), almost no hardware requirements which leads to better in-game experience too. The level of promotion stuff LoL comes up with every month and the quality of knowledge-based content is entirely at a different level. They have their own art and music production studios.
This doesn't mean ofc you cannot enjoy LoL on casual basis. It has lost of different modes, as well as two or three spin-off games and a recently beta-phase first-person-shooter game which is part CS:GO and part LoL in a far-fetched sense. I never read more about it but I think LoL has been fully released for mobile devices too and i almost full LoL, not a trimmed down version.
I do feel like I am on an unofficial LoL promotion campaign here hahaha, but im a hardcore gamer sorta thing and u should take my opinions in that perspective. Been gaming since 1980s... so u can guess my 'problem'. hahaa
Have fun.
League is much more simple, but its much tighter and grounded. Less room for error, less time to react. You need to be able to act sporadically. Thats why it feels like everyone else is a 'pro' by dota standards. Its MUCH faster paced and games can end in a single decisive teamwipe.
IN dota, you are given a LOT to process. Surroundings, numbers, healthbars, items, day/night, elevation, etc. And as such, its a slower game.
Both are very different beasts, coming from someone who has played nearly every mainstream MOBA (Smite, LOL, Dota, HOTS, etc) Your skill in one WONT transfer over to the other.
Yeah thats a thing with its ping. My dota ping is almost unplayable when connecting to regions other than SEA server. And even on SEA's ping, the gameplay gives me lags, not to forget those weird bugs of server disconnections, freezes and stuff. For LoL, i have been playing on EU all the time (i am in asia), and game play is perfectly fine despite higher ping. Also, u can set that option called 'movement prediction' i think, which toggles between actual ping-based delayed response and ur local PC based immediate response. Sorry, its a hard feature for me to explain lol
Another awkward thing with LoL is how they register players with specific servers only. To connect to a different server, you gonna have to make a new account and grind its stuff up from scratch. To transfer whole data of an account to a different region, u have to pay. While in dota, u can just select any region u want to connect to regardless of the ping numbers. There are only two EU regions in LoL i think and there are a number of Asian servers: Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Phillipines (dont know others). So, i wanted to say if ur long queue times is a persistent issue, try any other server if it helps as u know Koreans and Chinese are MAD about this game lol.
Playing on Phillipines? Cowsep fan ? LOL See, thats the thing I miss in DoTA all the time... Cowsep, Trick2G, Yasso, Huzzy, DoubleLift, BoxBox, AshOnLoL... there are so many people.
For me it was opposite. I kinda remained stuck at a stage in DoTA2 and i got frustrated by the recent weird development phase. LoL was more methodological in its approach, and you have to be so coz it is so fast. This forced me to develop a learning routine and to do proper homework before picking a lane to play or a champ to select. Thats why this concept of "maining" or one-tricking is so damn prevailant in LoL. You can't be good at all lanes all the time. You have to stick with handful of champs and two roles most of the time unless u are above-average polymath sort of guy. And even the second role is due to matchmaking issues. Otherwise, most of higher skilled players stick to only one role. In dota2, i could just pick any champ i like, go anywhere and try any thing i want and then figure out things on the fly. I guess thats one reason why the community seems so frustrated at the influx of less-experienced/casual players. It doesn't force u at any thing at all. Like i said before, if there was a solid development process going on, u can take this approach to a next level too! But dota development is stuck and so are the rest of things with it.
Yeah LoL's interface is still sitting pretty much in late 90's and early 20's.
Enemy's ability bars? Thats what League expects u to know already hehe. Yup! Its that much archaic and still it goes. For some one like me with initial experience in DoTA2, thats one of several major hurdles. But, after playing LoL for two years, I hardly need to look at enemy abilities coz now I know them all anyways. Thats how I came to know why vets hate 'interface enhancements' which make the game 'easier' or linear. They like to keep it sophisticated and do lots of math mentally without having to keep clicking and just 'looking' all the time... they like to calculate.
I hope if a compromise was possible, new players allowed some features and upper ranks have them disabled. Every one happy! Yeah well...
Another thing, in dota, u press Alt to see tower range and camp spawn boxes etc etc... In LoL, turret range is only shown in bot matches hehe ... you have to memorize the range on your own! I hated this and died several times... now I actually like it. Kinda makes me feel satisfied coz i dont have to do any extra clicks/keys to know something I already know.
No timers are shown for alt-clicking enemy abilities, spells and items, only name is shown. In dota, timers are also possible for all abilities and items i think ? haven't played in a long long time.
You can see their items, ults, summoner spells and runes in scoreboard (Tab), and some additional stats+items if u click on the enemy champion (a small sized bar/hud is shown on top left corner) .. awkward but thats what u got!!!
