Nothing happened, just old Battle.Net got really old and crappy, eventually people started playing DotA 2, some fans went for LoL, some to Heroes of Newereth.

The DOTA I remember was a custom map in Warcraft 3... DOTA 4.3 if I remember. First of the MOBAs that I can remember playing

and dota 2, all the heroes items.........etc is from warcraft 3 directly.

luna, sniper, zeus......etc are from warcraft 3 directly.

so in other words, blizzard has a portion of copyrights to dota 2.

in order to include those heroes which you saw in dota 2, they need permission from blizzard who is in charge of warcraft 3.

lol noo its more like valve has copyrights from blizzard it came from blizzards game and their map editor regardless though blizzard wouldnt hire ice frog to make dota a reality so valve hired icefrog to make dota 2 what it is today

I would know only because dota 1 was my favorite game I played alot many many years of playing dota 1
