Learning to market dota2 items
I need some help understanding the mechanics behind earning and selling Dota items. It seems almost everything I have is not marketable. The candy shop that is on at the moment says the diretide item on the left is not marketable, but the other two skins didn't say not marketable. I redeemed them with candy, then in my inventory they said 'not marketable' and 'on trade cool down until 25th Nov'. Now the cooling is gone but they still say not marketable (but didn't say this on the candy store). I also have other random cosmetics that also say not marketable. How on earth do I get marketable items?

you buy them. Nothing earned for free is marketable in dota2

you buy the collectors. sell them next year. buy new collectors. sell them
Thanks for the info good to know!
I assume buying them with shards I earn for free is ok? Is it only the treasures or can I buy skins and sell them later too?
The only thing that appreciates in value are items or cosmetic bundles that have limited availability on popular heroes. They have to actually look cool enough for people to want them.
A good example was the lightning bolt immortal on Zeus. I remember when those were super cheap, but now it's 15 bucks or so.

most of the skin you earn now will cannot be marketable, until the season has ended for some collection or immortal, for the others, they are limited in time and will not be marketable
Thanks IcyLoneliness - how do I tell which is which?

Thanks too to Organ, I get that things don't appreciate in value, I am not looking to buy and sell with real money, just use what I earn in game to try to pay for Dota Plus. Are you saying that's basically not feasible?

general rule (caution not always true):
-If you open a chest/treasure (buy using real money)=>usually marketable.
-If you buy from market (again using real money)=>usually marketable.
-This year "battle pass" chests items with yellow info "marketable after TI" at the bottom => marketable after next year TI (1 year wait).
-Items obtained from other ways usually aren't marketable
-Trade means you can only trade with other or gift it

it very depends for example in bp 10 there was secret shop where you was able to get arcana that was marketable. so i traded my pa arcana for jugger

Oh really so even if I buy stuff with my shards then I won't be able to sell it even if I wait a year? So it sounds like my dream of 'earning' dota plus for free isn't really possible?

ha you didnt understand, the stuff we'r all talking to be sold after one year is from treasure from battlepass... BUT, dota + is nice for some cosmetic and to follow stats on your favorite heroes, do you know you can already follow stats for you heroes with this : https://dota2.fandom.com/wiki/Inscribed_Gem
I think I did understand, I'm asking if there are any options to buy and sell outside of battlepass items. I really appreciate all the responses but I must admit all these answers are a bit cryptic. Can somebody please answer these straightforward questions?
1) Can I sell things I directly unlock for FREE in game outside of battlepass? (So far the answer I have got appears to be no).
2) Can I sell things I buy with shards that I earned in game? (No clear answer so far)
3) Can I sell things I earn for free through battlepass? (So far it seems people are saying I can sell the chests if I wait one year, not sure if I can sell any of the other stuff?)
4) It sounds like people are saying that what I can sell is unlikely to be worth much so it doesn't look likely that I will earn enough to pay for Dota+ just by playing for free - is that an accurate assessment?
ok, thx
