Dota 2
How good is a Macbook pro for DOTA 2?
For work related reasons, I will be getting a top line macbook pro in the coming days. I just wanted to know if anyone has issues playing DOTA 2 in macbook pro. As I searched, all I could find was 'macbooks are not for gaming' chorus and bashing in most of the places. If anyone has first hand experience, please respond

mac are pcs
if you want to know how well a game will run on a pc, you need to say it's spec
"top line macbook" mans nothing.
i have a top line 2007 mac book pro and it is absolute trash, youtube videos lags on it since when i updated it to maverivik, while i have a 700$ "mid-high line"laptop wich can run well almost everything
so, you should say stuffs like:
-resolution
-gpu
-cpu
-ram
-os version
-other things that might help
Yezzz... But iz alzo 'bout zoftvare az vell, no?

with half of the money you can build a pc that overkills dota with 120 fps

instead you choose to play in a expensive fancy toaster that overheats in 1 hour or less dropping the fps..

whatever, it will run but you will get laptop perfomance
OP said it was not primarily for gaming, as they were getting it for with related reasons...
thankyou for the answers, really helpfull

make sure you lower the bar rendering resolution it the most important factor to get high frames
Hello everyone. I recently downloaded DOTA2 onto my MBP. I came across this thread while trying to find a resolution to an issue I'm having and thought someone would benefit from my experience. Yes, I know PC is better for gaming but I don't play enough to justify another machine.

Specs:
CPU: 2.5GH Intel Core i7
Mem: 16GB DDR3
Storage: 500GB Flash
Graphics: AMD Radeon R9 M370X 2048 MB
Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB

Display 1: 15.4 inch (2880 x 1800) - AMD Radeon R9 M370X 2048 MB (This is the built in screen)
Display 2: 23-inch (1920 x 1080) - AMD Radeon R9 M370X 2048 MB graphics
Display 3: 27-inch (1920 x 1080) - AMD Radeon R9 M370X 2048 MB graphics

The game plays fine on the smaller screen the MBP comes with however when I try to play the game on either of the other 2 screens, it will only ever play in a window fitted specifically for the 15.4 inch screen. It seems to play fine, however it's a real annoyance to have a ginormous screen and not be able to utilize it. I also seem to have this issue with the Steam dashboard app.

So far I haven't I haven't found a resolution but if I do (I don't think I will) I'll update the thread.

Don't know if this will help you but worth trying...

I have a mac mini i5, 8 GB ram and ♥♥♥♥♥♥ (compared to yours) iris GPU and 1920x1080 22 inch monitor... My game runs at 50-60 fps, but my settings are all at low and rendering quality is at max. I didn't even try higher settings because I don't give a crap about effects and stuff, used to playing without it anyways... I read that at some forum, easyest way to test it and if it works, try adding effects that you like and see how it goes.

Hope this helps.

I actually set rendering to max and turned all the effects off and it runs really smoothly. I prefer a clear picture rather than bunch of effects.

play with the settings ,but if the pc overheat because some macs are fanless lower the setting a bit so you can get more fps

Mine has a fan because I can actually hear it :D I am satisfied with how it's running so I''m not touching anything... Thanks a lot anyway :)
Since I’m the one who made this thread and I have already got some experience with gaming in a MacBook Pro, I will give my valuable advice.

There is no lag , no FPS drop, you can max your graphics and play all you want. Dota 2 doesn’t support natural be resolution of the Mac and therefore your ultra detail shadows will still look pixelated.

Now , the most important thing, the consequence of playing dota in a MacBook Pro for too long. I had to get my battery replaced because of the constant over heating during long hours of play. The battery actually budged out and I noticed it only after it was very late. My MacBook actually started to wobble on flat surface because of this bulged underside. This happened a few months after completing a year (last month). I had to get the battery replaced for around $300.
hmm... I am planning to buy the 2017 macbook pro for working purpose. But with the heal problem I think I need to think again. Dota2 even run well in my old laptop xD
i run my dota 2 on a MBP Mid 2012 Model and it works just fine so you hsould be good. it has 4 gb ram and onboard graphics card, make sure you get a cooling pad because and its made of aluminium and tends to get quite hot while gaming . also place it on a table or a laptop stand while gaming aka dont use it on bed otherwise it will melt a hole through your bed if you game on it otherwise i get 50 fps and everything works just fine so go ahead get it !
