Urn of Shadows is a better pick than a soul ring I would say. Unlike most ring using heroes, pudge lacks the burst damage needed to properly use soul ring. Except his Q, every other spell of his is damage over time. Soul Ring works on hero that can afford to be on low health (Abbadon) or those who have burst damage which would let them quickly burst down their target before the health loss comes into play (Zeus).
Urn is a better option since it makes Pudge a bit tankier (his health without the passive is very bad for a strength heroes, and early game he won't be that tanky), the mana regen is always appreciated, and the active is always good for a hero who keeps using their own health to kill things.
I have been experimenting with Pudge quite a lot lately, my own conclusion is that I don't like bottle that much on Pudge when he is not mid. Mainly because your own mid will usually have bottle and you will not always get it refilled. So you will be walking around a lot with no mana or health, you may also have to walk all the way back to the fountain to get health and mana.
With the Soul Ring on the other hand, you could stay in lane, and you could get experience even if you are kind of low on health. Just give it a few seconds and you would have not only restored health but also mana whenever you need it.
Urn of Shadows, it has the same mana regen as Soul Ring, has no health regen, but does give +6 strength. This is just my personal option, but I would rather have mana whenever I need it instead of having it sometime soon.
Mana cost of Hook:
110/120/130/140
With a Soul Ring, you will ALWAYS have enough mana for a hook, because it gives you 150 mana.
Damage of the Hook:
90/180/270/360
Level 1 hook does not do a lot of damage, but from level 2 and up you will be doing decent damege to whoever you hit with your hook.
Cooldowns of the Hook:
14/13/12/11
When your hook is level 2, you will be able to hook every 13 seconds, you will do 180 damage every time, and you will always have enough mana for the hook.
If you had a bottle or Urn of Shadows, you would not be able to throw out as many hooks and have as much of an impact on the game.
Your options are: Hook someone, and then do it again in 13 seconds? That's likely to get you killed.
Use it to hook, and then not use it? Great job, you just wasted 775 gold.
Instead, you are better off getting Tranqs first. You have better roaming, and health regen so you can actually use your Soul Ring when you get it.
Or even go Tranqs and Bottle, because there are two runes that spawn every two minutes. You take one, and mid takes one. Heck, depending on mid it is actually smarter for them to cede the rune to you anyway if they are someone like Invoker who isn't terribly rune/bottle dependant.
Starting Items
- Tango
- Ring of Protection
- Wind Lace
- Branch or Obs Ward (Tho, sometimes better just to save the money for faster boots)
On lane build Tranquils (Since you already have the Ring of Protection just buy if from the sideshop) after the Tranquils make a Urn of Shadows, which will give you the mana regen you need and on top of that higher kill potential with the Soul Release pure damage from the Urn.
If you still dont have enough mana, just buy a mango, its very much worth the cost if it secures a kill for you and way better than Soul ring since it does not damage you on use.
