Dota 2 Engine Causing Head Ache and Eye-strain on Certain Video Setups
Hello Everyone. My Name is JuiceMan, and I'm an alcoh, er, I mean a Dota-holic. Love it! I'm really proud of the strides this game has made and to be a part of this community, imperfect as it is.

I hope someone, or a mod, can kindly assist me in getting this sorted out. I have access to 3 PCs. One has Intel HDgraphics, 22"LCD, another NVIDIA graphics/laptop, another AMD graphics/23"LCD. The AMD setup gives me eyestrain/headaches, the others - not so much.

This started when Reborn was in beta. Even on the Intel system I had eyestrain and couldn't play Reborn at all while it was in beta. For a while after Reborn was live I couldn't play, but soon I could play it on the Intel system, but not on the AMD system - didn't have laptop yet.

Eventually, Reborn was playable without head ache/eye strain on the AMD system (7870 HD card). But, every now and then, when an update is done, the eye-strain starts, and for a few update cycles, I can't play on that system, until some other update fixes it.

So most recently, with the release of Underlord, the headache/eyestrain is back. I have no idea what is changed in the engine to cause this, so I can't edit settings - and I have tried all kinds of setting changes to fix it. The Intel System (HD 4000) is playable, the NVIDIA system (960M) is playable, but it has to be in full screen mode, (windowed mode gives headaches).

Does anyone else have this issue, does anyone have any idea what the issue is, and how to fix it. Have I put this discussion in the most favorable section to get the issue looked at? Thanks a lot for reading and helping. Since the AMD system is my primary, I hope I can get a fix soon.

I knew a person with similar problems. Turned out it was a medical condition that had to be treated.
It's not a medical issue. You misunderstand. I can play Dota2 on the AMD system RIGHT NOW, using Pre-Underlord Dota2 - see I have multiple installs of Dota2 which I learned to do after Reborn Beta. But something within the Dota2 engine got adjusted with the Underlord update that causes this issue for me.

Can you see what I mean now?

Motion sickness?

Yes it is. But as I said, not on all computers, and not even always on the same computer. It seems to have something to do with some Dota2 engine options, sometimes its turned on, sometimes its turned off ... or something like that.

Maybe a certain heroes abilities?

Framerate or something?

"Optimized network processing to improve performance on low framerate systems. " was the last update, maybe it has something to do with it?

:RareSmile:After a time, you can become photo sensitive, didn't express it well but you get it. Can develop an increase sensivity to certain light effects... Happens in all games.
If you have a clear display (no coating) it accentuates...
Reduce Luminosity, calibrate on that .nl sacred site your display and you'll notice the difference. Lagom dot nl

Its definitely not hero dependent. It may have something to do with frame rates, but it would be something internal to what generates frame rates. It definitely started happening before the last update, and it happened occasionally before Underlord came out.

Because of this, I never update my current version of Dota2, I always made a copy and then updated because I never knew when an update will cause it. I don't know whether it has anything to do with the transparency filters, or something. I really don't know, just throwing something out there.

Thanks for the tip Aeon, and I'll try your suggestions, but since this is something the Dota2 engine does SOMETIMES, I'd rather find the solution to that, and fix it - if possible. Understand?

Yw, hope your problem resolves, I understand yes. The idea is that any headache or feeling is induced by light itself, flickerin (like some effects) and the gaming time, it's recommended that you take breaks, stretch etc. If you calibrate your display, get comfy with everything and don't have your eyes strained you should get better

its actually motion sickness, try turning off the screen shake option, some heroes abilities shake the screen slightly which gives a wrong feeling of moving and motion
helped me in my case at least

Thanks for all the replies and recommendations, I'm sure they'll help. BUT, it must be made clear that this is not something that should be considered solvable by the actions suggested, instead, I am trying to arrive at a fix that involves making adjustments to either my video card settings, or some under-the-hood Dota2 engine settings.

I can play Dota2 all day without any problems whatever if I play my pre-Underlord install of Dota2.

And I don't need to make any adjustments to lighting, screen-shake, or taking breaks etc.

I migliori auguri per le vittime del terremoto ! Spero di essere bene la vostra comunità . Sembri un uomo buono ... e questo è un bene per voi più che per gli altri :)

Its not personal Tom, unless you're talking about something that's different from the issue I raised here.
