How does Dota 2 recommendation system work?

Hi there!

I have a question about Dota 2 recommendation system.

On my profile I have 142 matches and 412 recommendations. The number of matches is correct, but 412 seems to be too much.

I usually get 1-2 recommendations per. match where it shows a small notification that a player has recommended me, so based on that the number of recommendations does not seem to match.

Maybe the system is coded, so a recommendation from certain players counts more than other players?

Sometimes, you simply don't receive notifications of commendations, when a player commends you before you load into the match results screen or if they commend you after you leave the match results screen.
