Dota 2

Why does it take so long to launch Dota 2?
I've a decent PC but it sill takes between 1 and 1 and a half minutes for the game to load. That's more than any high-end game I can think of, simply because the main menu is filled to the top with garbage. It used to be much faster until not long ago.

Between that and the end of support for older machines, it's no wonder Dota is losing popularity.

If you have a SSD then Dota 2 should load in literally seconds. And I don't think you're going to see a lot of people shedding tears for people with toasters not filling the matchmaking queues with leavers.

Why would I waste precious SSD space with a low-end game like Dota 2 and what does it have to do with leaving matches? My PC is probably better than yours btw.

I have even Battlefield V on a HDD and it opens in seconds, it's a matter of poor menu design not low-end computers.

People around me and I myself consider my pc a joke ^^ but im still able to play dota with no problems.

if you can't play dota let alone laucnh it. maybe it's time to upg your pc.

1. It's the video intro, there's a command line to skip video intro to make it faster to load (add -novid into general launch option from steam)

2. Dota2 had so much small files for skins and stuff.

Yes generally using SSD will load faster, but in my experience once you load dota2 once, the loading issue is no longer a problem.

Just removing video intro from launching already boost almost half of time to load the game.
Too make your experiences better when playing the game, make sure after loading the game watch live game first before you find a game, this way all the necessary texture of the game most of it already pre-cached into RAM before you play game.

Didn't work for me. I'll try moving Dota to my SSD later but it doesn't make sense, it's a high end PC with some of the fastest HDD available on the market. Maybe I've got some corrupt files or something, if the game loads fast for everyone else.

Yeah whatever pal

What doesn't work? if you get 10 sec less load means it's working, doesn't matter if initial load is 10mnts or 5mnts, and I've count every second of differences since I'm using 500GB 10 years old HDD.

There's no such things as FASTEST HDD, You can't magically make it faster just because you said so. HDD speed been stagnant for almost 3 decades in term of speed. all HDD only came with 5400/5900/7200RPM, anything else is just marketing gimmick (that's including SATA3, BLACK DRIVES, PERFORMANCE DRIVE, etc) if it's spinning platter, it's going to perform similar nonetheless.

hdds are slow no matter what, and how much is your load time?

Around 30 seconds on SSD and 1 and a half minutes on HDD. They're slow but only Dota 2 takes this long, which is why I wanted to ask if anyone else using HDDs has this problem.

It takes exatcly the same time so at least for me the -novid thing didn't work.

If it takes you 30 seconds to load Dota 2 on a SSD then you need to troubleshoot for other issues on your computer because it only takes seconds to load Dota 2 on my SSD, not half a minute.

Yes I'll do a fresh installation, the PC is fine and shouldn't take this long. I'm thinking some files are corrupted

No. It is a choice between loading all the assets into the memory now, or do it when the game needs them on spot.
Both approaches have their positives, negatives, strong and weak points. Slow initial load means no load time during the gameplay. Fast initial load means lags during the gameplay itself.

If the slow load you're talking about is actually during the match connection - choose to load a hero demo before doing anything in Dota. That should help you with slow load cases. If you're talking about the initial run of the game - then make sure nothing is trying to use your HDD at the same time, while Dota is trying to read its files. The spinning head can only be in one place at a time. Any HDD would drops performance because of attempts for parallel reading.
Windows antivirus is also known to re-check what applications do on your PC, so you might wanna either get rid of it, or make sure Dota is excluded from the check processes.
Also defragmentation.

did you fix this Issue ? I also have the same problem after formating the PC , cannot be the PC as am on 13900k rtx 4090 and m.2
TMS Feb 19 @ 7:52am
Running on a 7000mbps gen 4 m.2 64gb ram 12gb gpu ,yes the game is a stutter mess when launching , its to do the the internet speed and stutter because it needs to connect to the dota and steam servers to launch and also load your skins and assets, this includes skins/soundpacks/wallpapers you dont have , this is why the game itself is massive just for a game with 1 map, think back before when you had a skin all your friends was was the default skin , but you saw your skin, today you can see all the skins , yes I wish there was an option to turn this feature off and make the game smaller and take less time to load, but sadly there is no such option , if you cant load at all then well your pc is full of bloatware , I have less than 120 background processes running , a friend who I helped recently had 297 processes running , it was a mess but I fixed it and he is running fine now, even with the old pc he has
so go into task manager and check when you click on cpu if you have more than 130 then id say you have background bloatware from micropeni5555 i mean microsoft in the background , oh dont worry they are not spying on you not at all , they just need all your data and when your doing and listening to you FOR QUALITY REASONS ! , do this , have your phone or pc mic next to you and then talk about carrots or eyesight or something and you will see a random add within 24h about what you were talking about
