However there are 'mains' in DOTA it is just not a structured as in the other games, knowing how to play every role is important, but you only need to reach a certain level of competency, and that mostly comes from learning the abilities and limits of heroes in every role.
And while it comes to the individual cosmetics for every hero you like, sure you can do that but most of the time you will find one set that you really REALLY like and roll with it. When the seasonal events come out theres plenty of ways to get the new sets that come with the events and they are for just whatever heroes, im not sure how they decide.
Thank you so much! I have been super overwhelmed by how different this game is from LoL in terms of lane positions, team comps, and even non-gameplay related stuff, so even something as simple as knowing how people go about buying skins, easily the least important part of the game, is a place to start so I can sorta ground myself. It also sounds like you can earn skins and cosmetics from gameplay alone which is super cool to hear as well. You just made this noob feel a little less nooby. Thanks and have a great week!
They want you to pay for those drops now, ie. the battle pass which has far better sets than what used to drop anyway.
But a good skin set for a hero is 1-3 bucks a hero and most people don't main heroes. This is a strategy moba, not league of legends. You play this game like a strategy game.
