They are polar opposites.

Lycan is a hard carry. He uses his wolves to slow enemies (movement and attack speed), but primarily the wolves are useful for last hitting/denying and for proxy farming in the jungle. Also, the wolves are very good as wards as you can send them out to get vision of an area.

Beastmaster is more of an engager, but imo is not much of a tank. His boars are primarily used to pull jungle camps, harass enemies, and for last hitting/denying. The eagle is there as a ward that cannot move, but if you get shard the eagle can stun nearby enemies.. So in essence, Beastmaster's beasts are just weaker versions of Lycan's wolves. Beastmaster is really useful because with with scepter, he can spam his axe which is very good at stacking damaging from a distance.

Chen is a hard support. He can take control of jungle minions, but the strength of the minions depends on the level of his Holy Persuasion. With that being said, Chen is one of the easiest characters to shut down....clear camps and even then wiping out neutral minions is easy enough. I wouldn't waste my time learning Chen. Enchantress is a better alternative, but even Enchantress is bad.

Thank you both for helpful input!
Beastmaster seems like an in-between of Lycan and Chen (which isn't surprising, given he's Strength, which tend to be Pos. 3), He's technically tanking via kiting enemies more than anything, though one could argue Lycan is more of a traditional tank by virtue of lifestealing. I do find BM's Hawks invaluable, because he's able to throw observer wards out there wherever he wants, especially when ratters try to escape into trees.

Agreed with Chen. It's shocking that Holy Persuasion hasn't been reworked into a global ability, where he can just click on any creep no matter the distance, provided there's vision. The fact he has to waddle all over the map to hopefully find un-emptied camps just sort of solidifies how much harder he is to master than Meepo (all-if-one dies is less harsh than Chen's feeble minions all dying to AOE, and all camps are gone at the 1:00 mark)

You're welcome. As you have noticed, Chen is a very underwhelming character. Awhile back, Chen was very strong, so the devs gutted his kit into the mess that it is currently. Although, Valve did change the properties of his passive, which imo makes him worse, but its at least a sign that they are looking into reworking Chen. Personally, I think that Chen is not as difficult as people make it out to seem. Meepo is far more difficult since you have to keep an eye out for all of your meepos that are spread out across the map, whereas you only have to worry about Chen.

As for Beastmaster, he is also not that good imo. Beastmaster does not tank as hard as he needs to, and mid-late game, his only use is to spam axe and ult.

Lycan is the only character that you listed who I feel is unique enough to fulfill the role that he was designed for.
