2. Uninstall Dota 2
3. Stop watch / reading any video / post about Dota 2
4. Punch your face really hard when you want to install it back / play it again
Can't play it, if it isn't installed:

To the OP, just delete dota and start selling your items. Once you start selling items you really are ripping a part the desire for jumping back in, especially if you cared about those items and spent money on it. Then give it a week or two and you wont really have any special urge to get back in to the game, and if you are anything like me you will be super happy for all the extra time it gives you.
I wouldn't call it trolling. I mean, OP did ask how to stop playing Dota. Uninstalling the game is step 1...and pretty much the only step.
the main problem is there's nothing else out on the market that really grasps your attention. you've spent probably thousands of hours mastering this game, learning the in's and outs, now when trying to quit and play something else, it just seems pointless.
every game is repetitive - this is one reason why ppl keep coming back to dota. although dota is as repetitive as other games, (mmorpgs - daily quests, quests, gg. other moba's, just as boring. FPS - same map over and over they're fun for maybe 100 hrs then get old fast.) there's literally nothing else to play.
one way i found to kill a few months - take up a light novel or in my case, read every translated one on the market.
light novels - are chinese translated novels, that typically involve author plot armor, face slapping, and some dry sense of humor... but over all.. they're not too bad. one of the better ones is called Coiling Dragon... if your bored, check it out.
get a job. - will get you back out there in the real world unless u already have one, then get a hobby. my sis's hobby and her fiance (who she met on this site) is called poshmark, where she goes to fleamarkets, garage sales, thrift stores, etc.. and resells it... for like 5x - 20x what she bought it for. you can also resell on mercari and ebay..etc... as for clothes, you need to learn the brands and figure out what sells and what doesn't, as for items, just use ebay for reference to if random items sell or not...
or in the end you can lurk on steam forums about dota, laugh at ppl complaining and think "thank god i'm not playing that" and then 2 or 3 months later you'll get the random urge to play a hero out of no where, and then you start questioning why you quit/uninstalled to begin with... (what typically happens to me).
