Far from it; spamming gives you intimate familiarity with your chosen hero, which lets you improve faster:
1. You gain mastery of that hero, and thus can play it above your actual skill level
2. Your hero is not a variable in your performance, making play more consistent
3. You can focus more on the state of the game than your hero's abilities, allowing you deeper observation.
Pro coach Speeed (of Gameleap Dota) is of the opinion that spamming a pool of 1-3 heroes in your chosen role is the fastest way to improve, and he says it was one of the factors in him getting from bottom ranks to Top 100 Immortal.

Well, you can't realistically master 100+ heroes either. Most people recommend that you be able to play at least 10 heroes well and 3-5 heroes really well.
If you want newbie heroes that can be good:
- Sniper
- Bloodseeker
- Viper
If you want heroes that may help you climb the rank:
- Meepo
- Arc Warden
- Enigma

Too sad lc > techies xd
Yes, as a casual player you can focus on a few heroes but in general not only you have to master a few heroes but have to know the strengths and weaknessess of the heroes your oppenents may play on an expert level. As Dota2 says it's best to understand opponent heroes by playing them yourself. You are just a better counter. Also spamming heroes often includes to stick to a certain role what reduces your general understanding of the game. Spamming heroes is maybe a way to increase mmr but 5 different heroes in 5 different roles a day really makes you a better Dota player. I'm quite convinced about that.
But, yes - everybody to his own fashion. Try to get to Top 100 immortal in spamming heroes. For sure it's not my way, also because it is boring.
