And it's not supposed to be fun. If they let you play all pick you would have no reason to avoid getting thrown in.
You're lucky you never got low pri back when it was "all random" only.
(I checked open dota for myself, I have a total of 5 playing DOTA 2, ever. Including 2 afk (son waking up) and 2 disconnects (power)).

Mute teammates, farm the enemy noobs while they flame eachother and feed.

Well it's not malarkey then, is it? It's less about how many abandons you have and how close together they all are. I've got 11 abandons on my record but those are spread across most than 2,600 matches, so I have avoided the LPQ.
Next time something like this happens, have one person play both heroes while the other one takes care of your kid. You'll probably lose but at least you won't get an abandon.
P.S. LPQ isn't fun because of the people, but Single-Draft mode is fine. I play it some times just for fun.
