Dota 2 is a child of valve, which is a huuuuge company, they have the biggest online game store, they have several blockbuster games such as half live and counter strike, they've got a ton of things to deal with. + Dota really lacks that monetizing features that LoL has, even though in game items are sold, it doesn't (probably, don't cite me on that) not too much of a difference, since other games also sell in game items, and the reward vs amount of work is not equal for adding another game + in game items to that store.
And let's face it, crates, cosmetic items, DLCs is a really ugly way of monetizing a game. Back in the old school days of the gaming industry you've payed for a game and you have got all in game items, all "DLCs" and other stuff. You didn't need to pay extra for that.
Another thing is: over time valve has grown another huge greedy corp. They make most revenue by publishing other people's games on their store. They don't want to focus on developing games any more (which is now a huge mess, especially the AAA gaming industry). Games are really hard to make profitable. And probably (again don't cite me) they think the dota 2 community is big enough. Look at those price pools at any international. I really doubt that any game con top that.
But all in all you're right valve does a pretty bad job at marketing, but the reason for that is that they've got other stuff. Riot games however lives on lol, and wants to sustain itself and relies on that marketing.
I really hope I could explain stuff in a way easy to understand. And pls keep in mind that everything I've said are all asumptions, and might be wrong.
Cheers
and now, i'm surfing the web to find out that only a small amount of people question this.
and then saying they don't make games anymore because they have steam is untrue. they do make games, but most have been cancelled. come on, your reply was from april 2020. that is mere days from the release of half life alyx. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ people.
Valve is only interested in tormenting solo queue players and it has kept the tradition for 10 years. They recently added literally a tormentor in the map.
Speechless as I am, Valve keeps spoiling Dota for faithful players: maphack, boosters, trolls run rampant with no punishment.
In fact, the more serious you are about your rank the more miserable you will be. The emotional damage is anguishing.
Dota has a strong life because it was created by players with passion and love, it can survive the harsh soil of Valve so many years (I quit 9 years ago thought it will die soon) which proves its potential is unthinkable. Given a better host this game will destroy other games.
We need to talk to Valve, face to face.
Today I played 5 games, I got all kinds of trolls on my team and boosters on enemy team trying hard like their money is on it.
If you don't have friends don't play Dota, but if nobody has friends then no new players is coming.
